My 9 year old dog had a dental today and when I picked her up at 4, her temp was 98.6 and the vet said she'll warm up as the night goes on but her temp is 98.2 now. Is this a cause for concern or normal since she still has anesthesia in her system? At what point is a temp too low on a dog?

Hello - and first of all, how was the temperature taken?  To take the temperature properly, a lubricated thremometer should be placed into the rectum - not the middle, because you dont want to take the temperature of the poo - but against the rectal wall.  Thermometers have been known to cause serious damage to the rectal wall, so unless you have been trained, your vet or nurse should be doing this.   The good news is that if you give them a call, most vets will be more than happy to talk with you about your dogs' post op temperature and usually they will be happy to check it again.  They can then evaluate it in context.  (I'm afraid that I cant give out real time instructions if the animal is already under another vets care).

A normal temperature for a dog is between 38 and 39 degrees centigrade.   That ranslates as 100.4 - 102, roughly, so I do think it's inportant to establish whether your dog is struggling or whether this is a user error.

Thank you. It was taken correctly and ended up at 97.4 so we took her to the er and they admitted her and kept her overnight.
