Wound on dogs face

I believe a week ago i noticed a lump on my dogs face which was black in color and a very odd shape, I was petting him in the dark and I thought it was dirt so i picked it off not knowing it was some sort of scab. Ever since then the wound has been open and my dog has been acting stranger than usual. There is still some of the black scab around the wound, I did try and wash it with water but im not sure what else i can do to help.

The other thing that I cant do is to identify the original lump and this may be vital, also.
