15day old kitten just fully opened his eyes yesterday. Before he opened his eyes, there were discharges and one day there were puss. I cleaned his eyes frequently. When his eyes are fully opened, his right eyes seems to be covered by something. Vet has checked him today, it’s not ulcers. But my vet didn’t tell me what exactly it is. He was prescribed maxitrol ointment to use and will be rechecked in three days. Can I please have some advice from you? Is this cataract? What treatment should he take? Thanks
Hello!
We're glad that you've been to a vet, because eye cases are generally emergencies. The sort of eye you are describing is often very painful and at risk of permanent blindness if left.
Your vet should have examined the eye in some detail at close quarters, probably with the aid of an opthalmoscope, in order to diagnose it. Sometimes, in difficult cases, referral to an eye specialist may be needed.
Whatever it is that my your vet has said to you, they have had the benefit of being able to examine the eye and their information will be more valuable than anything we can tell you from a photo (furthermore, we are not your vets, so it would not be professional to start commenting on that, especially given our restricted view).
A cataract is something within the eye that light will not pass through - without an opthalmoscope it is impossible for me to know whether your kitten has one or not.
Maxitrol is useful in some eye cases and can be harmful in others. This is why a vet examination and keeping to rechecks is so important.
Please let us know how your little one gets on.
