Hello! That's an interesting place. Is it being licked? Non itchy causes of hair thinning might include demodex mites (relatively uncommon in kittens compared with dogs), scarring, superficial fungal causes eg ringworm. There are also some hormonal reasons for baldness although again, these are relatively uncommon in kittens.
Licking however is a more common cause of alopecia and can occur as a result of fleas (even in those cases where you can't actually see any, regular good quality flea treatments can sometimes make a huge difference), allergy (perhaps a bit young yet?), nervousness / anxiety, superficial mite infections of various types, and also localised pain amongst other causes.
I'm interested that you don't have a local vet that you trust - this is concerning because obviously a new kitten will need regular anti-flea / worm / vaccinations etc and this one appears to have a health issue that does need attention, particularly if it is expanding. Whether you make peace with your old vet or seek out a new one further away is up to you, but kittens do need vet-checks and we'd be the first to explain that judging from a photo and some lines on the internet is no substitute.
All the best with this and please do let us know how you get on.
