Hello! - indeed, I could give you an interesting list of possibilities that it 'might' be, but while some of them are quite benign, others are unpleasant and even life-threatening, so we would encourage you to find out what it actually is. It doesn't look like a tick in this picture, but that can be difficult online. Usually your vet could rule out ticks for you very quickly. Your vet may not be able to tell you a diagnosis right away either: an unpleasant lump can sometimes look very similar to a benign one, so they may wish to take a sample of one kind or another. Is it painful? As a general rule, cancer is not (but can become so - and inflammatory lesions can sometimes appear painless too, so this isn't fool-proof). It seems a very good idea to pay you vet a visit and get the ball rolling. Best of luck - and please do let us know.
