My 5 month kitten died. I don't know what was wrong with her. I got a kitten 2 weeks ago from someone online. From the time that we got her she has had bad breath, like really bad. We noticed her poop smelled like her breath. Really bad but not exactly a "poop" smell. We also noticed her meow was very raspy and it sounded like she was breathing raspy but only a little bit sometimes. The sound came and went I just thought maybe that was normal for some kittens. I also noticed she wasn't playful or curious like other kittens. She would hide for days at a time. I originally thought maybe she was just coming out at night instead like our other cat does, he sleeps all day and comes out and does everything at night. So not seeing her during the day didn't strike me as odd at first. But I figured out that isn't the case. Then Saturday I managed to get her out of her hiding spot and noticed her nose and eyes were leaking and it was all over her face. It was brownish? It maybe looked like dried blood, but I wasn't sure. I planned on calling the vet monday. No vets by me have weekend hours and the closest emergency vet is a bit over an hour away and I don't drive. Sunday everything was normal then she started breathing weird but my plan was to take her in the next day so I let it go. We left to run some errands and when we came back she had passed away. She looked like she had leaked blood from her mouth that was in her fur on her face. I'm now worried about my other older cat maybe getting sick because he was by her.

Hello - and I'm extremely sorry that you lost your new kitten.   This is a horrible story and must have been very difficult for both you and the kitten.  Sadly it is only too common, that people are sold a kitten online with what may have been a pre-existing disease, or may have been a rapid decline.   For this reason we normally advise a vet check at handover.  You may want to consider reporting the incident and the advert to the RSPCA. Are you in the UK?  In any country, but certainly by law in the UK, if an animal under your care is poorly, then you do have a duty to provide timely  veterinary care, even if that involves travelling.  This sometimes involves taking a kitten to the vets in the middle of the night or out of hours and will invoke a fee because there is no NHS for animals.  A poorly kitten can deteriorate very fast and often won't wait until Monday, which is the reason for providing 24 hour care. As is not within your remit to do this, we would strongly advise that you do not replace the kitten. Wishing you all the best after this traumatic and regrettable experience.

It is difficult to say what was wrong with the kitten;. Maybe she was born with a GI tract disorder or birth defect, or maybe she contracted an infectious disease.  Please could we recommend a full vet check for your older cat and to seek veterinary advise regarding cleaning up in such a way that existing pathogens are removed from the environment as soon as possible.
