Hello! Tracheobronchitis (the posh name for kennel cough) is inflammation of the trachea / bonchi, which causes a nasty cough. It can be caused by several different things, one of which is a bacteria called Bordetella Bronchiseptica. The latter is very easily spread, indirectly (eg on objects, clothing etc) as well as by direct coughing. However, there are other potential causes including other infectious causes. It is not uncommon for owners to tell me that their dog couldn't possibly have kennel cough as it hasn't been anywhere and the cough to still go away with time +/- anti-inflammatories, just as one would expect. Moulds, however, can cause coughing and are definitely important to mention to your vet.
