anal discharge

hello! I have noticed over the last couple weeks that my male cat who is 2 and a half years old has had some white liquid coming from his bum. He doesn’t flinch when I look nor does it smell. He has not acted out of the ordinary at all and has been eating and going to the bathroom normally. I only noticed it 3 times within the last month with the most recent being last night. A little advice on what it might be would be great! Thank you!

Hello!  One source or white stuff coming out of the bum is actually the anal gland, but stuff coming out of there tends to have a strong, characteristic smell.  I have emptied anal glands before and had owners run from the room with a hand over their mouths (oddly, I have a very poor sense of smell and can barely smell it so this has always interested me).

Anal gland secretions come from little openings - if you look at the anus and imagine it as a clock-face, the anal glands open as little slits on the anus at twenty-to-two and that is where the goop comes out.

However, you seem to be describing white stuff coming out of the main hole ,as a poo would.  There are some occasions where the stool can contain far too much fat.  This can be because of the diet, but it can also be due to the way that your cats' body - liver, pancreas, metabolism etc - is processing fat.  White discharge from the anus is therefore worth consulting your vet about.
