Hello. Long story My 11 month old border collie around a month ago suffered a bout of diarrhea with blood and being very down. She was put on antibiotics and recovered slowly, she also had a very slight hack cough every so often, but never stopped wanted to eat grass. Then 2 weeks ago she hurt her leg, ended up having xray and then ct scan. The xray was on a Wednesday and the ct on the Friday, she has mild diarrhea on Thursday, then after the ct scan has had bad diarrhea with blood since and again extremely lethargic, i gave her chicken and rice and made her worse and now given scrabled egg only after a fast period but that hasn't helped. Her belly is clearly sore and she's got gas and is just so unhappy. She's got the odd drop of water falling from her mouth and has the odd hack cough but likely from the 2 anathetics I've taken her back to my vets who have put her on antibiotics again to see if this helps. It's certainly seems to been retriggered by the two lots on aesthetic + contrast? During the first bout she was given millbemax and i also did my own fecal tests for internal worms, lung worm and then did a rapid antigen giardia test all returned negative She will of had pre anasthetic blood tests. The leg issues seems to just be rapidly getting better and won't need treatment so im not bothered about that, just need her back right. If the antibiotics don't resolve this what else am i looking at, I'm desperate for her to be a happy normal dog again. Untill now she's been a normal dog with no issues and fed anything with no belly issues. Just to add shes DNA tested clear of mdr1

Hello - it sounds as though this poor dog has had some level of symptoms from virtually every body system;  GI tract (vomitting), musculoskeletal system, airways (coughing).  I wonder whether one of these is a 'main' problem and the others are secondary to stress / age / a struggling immune system.  A good question for your vets is, 'Can we make list of symptoms / clinical signs together' (this may include vomitting, coughing, limping etc - and if some of the signs are short-lasting, date them).   Then, "what explanations for each of these signs could there still be? (I guess that quite a few things will have been ruled out by now)."   If the vomitting / abdominal pain ×/- diarrhoea is still a presenting sign, I wonder whether pancreatitis has been ruled out?  This can present intermittently or continually as is frequently overlooked in young dogs.  Can pain or internal bleeding be ruled out?  Has a pyometra been ruled out if your girl is intact?  In the UK it is unusual to give antibiotics as a firstline treatment for bloody diarrhoea because the cause is rarely thought to be bacterial, so I wonder if it was definitely an antibiotic and if so, why this was chosen in that case. It is unusual for a GA to caused GI (gasterointestinal) signs and while it happens sometimes, in cases where the signs predated the GA it is often not the most likely suggestion.  However, stress and GAs can both add to GI signs at times.  It sounds to me as though there is a lot going on to get your head round.  Therefore to reiterate:  we would reccommend a consultation simply to talk things through, and would encourage you to concentrate on the symptoms and 'What could be causing them / what have we ruled out' approach.  The next question of course, is 'What is now the most likely' and 'How would we rule it out?'   I hope that something there is useful.

Ps another disease that your vet might want to rule out, is Addisons.  This can be done with certain extra blood tests and may be worth asking about, although this patient isn't in the typical age group.

Thank you for the reply. I think ill give the antibiotics till friday to work and if no better we'll go back and ask for bloods for pancreatitis etc. She is intact yes. The diarrhea has gotten a bit better on sweet potato and chicken. The lethargy hasn't shes incredibly lethargic. It's Metronidazole she's on so definitely antibiotic. Shes never had vomiting and the slight cough seems to of gone(probably ga tubes).

It sounds to me as though it'd be a good idea to ask how soon the vet wants to see you back given the signs are as they are; depending on details I dont know, they  may have a tmimescale in mind.  Best of luck and I hope you get to the bottom of it.

(On a practical level, after Friday comes the weekend so if this is likely to progress quickly they may want to see you sooner).

I took her back to the vets this morning and had bloods etc done. She's come back as having pancreatitis, they think she has an infection as well so have given synulox as well as the other antibiotic. Keeping her on low fat, bland diet. We're going back Friday to the vets for a recheck

Had recheck today. She's been much more lively, poo normal except a small amount of blood. However her temperature has gotten worse and white blood counts up and they don't know why(shes been on two antibiotics) They've now kept her in for fluids. They ran an ultrasound that showed nothing and looked for pyro and found none. So all bit of a mystery
