Hello vets thank you for your time. I have a question about castrating. I have a lab x rottie who is 15 months. He's up to date on vaccines, wormer flea treatment. He went to the vets for his checkup and since December he had put on 0.6kg so stopped growing. He's booked in for castrating in 2 weeks time. I have spoken to someone since who is not medically trained, who told me if you castrate too early they can get stuck in adolescents. I have tried finding this out for myself but I can't find anything. We're going through adolescents and it's hard work and really don't want him stuck in it. We are castrating to prevent any procreation accidentally by him. Can you possibly answer this or point me in the right direction. Thank you for your time.

Hello there!  I have not heard of dogs getting stuck in adolescence as a result of being castrated.  Various studies have been done and I am aware of no clear evidence in support of a particular time-frame for male neutering, which may explain why surgeon's preferences can vary slightly from dog to dog, according to their past experience.  There are certainly pros and cons of neutering and it's good to ask your vet about these, but I know of no specific reason not to castrate, relating to this dogs' age and size.
