Picture warning please help

Hey vets so my dog is having kinda flakes in his fur even after washing, he has redness and around his butt, he is sneezing and is having nasty burps. Unfortunately the vet can’t get me in until three weeks!!! I need help is there anything over the counter I can try for him. I feel so bad.

Hello and thankyou for the pictures.  How long is It going on for and how comfortable is your dog?  It sounds to me, having seen the pictures, that 3 weeks may be too long for this and that if you ask the receptionist for the urgency of the case to be triaged by a vet or nurse - perhaps you could offer to email the pictures - they might be prepared to review it or discuss interim treatments.  'Itchy skin' with a low-key dodgy tummy might reasonably wait for three weeks, but this looks intense. If the vets are not prepared to escalate the urgency of this case, then they may need to make recommendations to keep your dogs skin from getting worse in the meantime. Is that butt getting rubbed?  If so, pain might be a possible cause.  There may be a possibility of mites, fleas, tapeworms or of internal diseases such as pancreatitis causing pain and intensifying scratching behaviour.  Anal glands and allergies may also be on your vets list. It hasn’t been going on for long he isn’t really itching and the butt has been red for maybe a week now but he’s pooping and everything fine. I do believe it may be his food I did get him so dog allergy meds and am going to switch the brand of his food. The vet here is crazy. I’m just trying to do what’s best for him I didn’t realize the food I got him was so bad.

Yeah, I'd agree with my colleague Liz here, that looks really uncomfortable! Food allergies are one possibility, but there are lots of other things that could cause this, so I'd really try and get him seen as soon as you can. I'd be cautious about using any lotions or creams on it, as without knowing what's going on it could make it worse. I'd also watch really closely to see if the redness is spreading - if so, definitely give the vets another call, and let them know that. Good luck, and do let us know how he gets on!

I would look for a different vet if they couldn't see my dog for 3 weeks! Another option would be an animal hospital for emergencies, although this would cost more. Wishing you and your dog the best!
