Happy tail

My 6 year old show cocker spaniel has the waggiest tail ever! Unfortunately he has happy tail and despite splint, bandage and inflatable collar he keeps uncovering it, knocking it again and bleeding everywhere. I wouldnt say he is losing loads of blood and the actual wound is smaller than my little fingernail. He had this just over 2 years ago and the vet spoke of amputation....thankfully it healed. This time it's been going on for coming up to 3 weeks. Any advice other than perservering with collar and rebandaging.....he emotianally blackmails me into removing his collar.. then...it's off!!! An animal behaviourist friend of mine hasbrecommended some wound powder to stop the bleeding. It's being delivered tomorrow. Bandaging technique/miracles greatly appreciated. Thankyou. Hello - what a lovely soft collar!  I'm not sure if this is reassuring, but tail wounds are difficult and if you ever find a quick and easy solution to this one, Im sure that a lot of vets would be pleased to know!  Light packaging has always worked best for me - it is a slow and difficult process.  I have been known to refreshen the edges, even amputating tail bones, but the worry is that the problem is then repeated, higher up so careful assessment of the skin and nerves in important.   I wonder if your vet can ask a referral surgeon for suggestions - or whether these cases simply don't get referred.  I will ask elsewhere for opinions and come back to you - meanwhile, please do let us know how you get on.

Brian is booked.for his tail amputation surgery tomorrow. I am so worried about his pain control when we bring him home. Are there any questions I should be asking when I take him in the morning? What pain meds should I expect and should he be given anything to help him to stay calm while he is recovering? Do you think thus collar will be ok post surgery? I'm sorry I'm a panicky neurotic mess.

Surgery is done. He's drowsy and quiet due to anaesthesia and pain meds. Hopefully we are on the road to recovery now.
