My 11 year old female spayed golden retriever has been doing a heavy pant for months. I’ve brought her to my mom house with me and while here her panting is much worse. She’s been to the vet and per the vet she’s in good health. I’m wondering why she is doing this. I have trazadone 100 mg that I give her during thunder storms or fireworks. But even the trazadone doesn’t seem to be calming her down. She is currently on a regiment of steroids at the moment for an ear hematoma. Can the steroids make her more anxious than normal?  Could that be the reason for a heavier pant? I tried to attach a video but it was too large. Any advice appreciated. Thanks-

Hello and thank you for this question.  A lot of animals do anecdotally experience an increase in panting in the days following some steroids- please check with your vet whether this seems appropriate.   However, I do have concerns because it is not uncommon for older retreivers in particular to lose blood into the abdomen and this can also cause panting, as can pain from any source, lung disease and also heart disease.  Please contact your vet immediately for triage as I suspect that she may need to be examined.
