I know we need to take him to the vet but it's Sunday and I wanted to see if there was anybody who could help us understand what this may be. It looks like some type of sore or abscess

Hello and thank you for these pictures. They are not ever so clear (oh the joys of trying to photograph that spot in a sore cat) but I suspect a deep erosion in a very sore, vulnerable place and would suggest that as a minimum, pain releif will be extremely important. Please ask for an examination for your cat in the very short term.
