My 1 1/2 year old cat appeared with this last night. I’m not sure if him and one of my other boys were playing too rough or if it’s something else. His jaw is a little swollen and I can tell it’s bothering him and he did have some bleeding. He was still eating and drinking but he is a little down with not as much energy. I will absolutely take him to the vet if I need to, but does it look like something that absolutely needs a vet visit or just a little cut that needs time to heal on its own?IMG_2976

There are a few causes of swellings like this that might resolve by themselves.  However, this cat sounds to be in pain and / or systemically (i.e. whole body) affected by the lesion.  Many of the possible causes can be expected to progress - get worse - for example, fractured jaws, damaged teeth, cancers, some infections and foreign objects.  I would therefore reccommend seeking veterinary triage and / or consultation on this one.  In the past, lesions like this would almost always had received an anti-inflammatory and antibiotic as a matter of routine.  There has been increasing awareness of the damage that can arise from adopting this as a blanket approach (antibiotic resistance), so the vet may try to work out where the lump is originating from, test for different types of bacteria and consider a range of pain releif before deciding on a plan.
