Hi!  Where on the body is this?  My first thought was mites; There are itchy kinds (eg Sarcoptes) and non-itchy kinds (demodex) that are associated with patchy hair-loss.  There are also potential fungal diseases such as ringworm so it might pay to avoid touching the area until you know. Your vet can organise tests for these if that's what they suspect when they have had chance to examine the site properly.    Please do let us know what they find!

Firstly thank you, The spot is right under his left ear. I've scheduled him for an appointment with the vet but the soonest they had is Tuesday. Might you advise what I need to do in the interim? i.e. cleaning, bathing in general? Again thank you

Hello!   In general with dry flakey spots, I might advise that people avoid touching them and keep them away from immuno-compromised people such as older people, cancer patients, children and other dogs, just on the off-chance it's fungal e.g. ringworm which is contagious.  Most of the possibilities I've thought of require diagnosis-dependent treatments to sort them out so hopefully you'll have your answer soon!
