Labrador ate several pieces of chewed up sugar-free chewing gum

My 10 year old male Labrador Retriever ate around 6-8 pieces of chewed-up chewing gum. The gum is Mentos Pure-Fresh sugar-free gum, and it contains Xylitol. Same gum as in below Walmart website https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mentos-Pure-Fresh-Sugar-Free-Chewing-Gum-with-Xylitol-Fresh-Mint-Bottle-50-Count/38253415   This was used gum. I chewed it up good and then place it in a plastic tray to throw away. He came and ate it all. I read online that Xylitol is toxic and I should take the dog to the vet immediately. The vets in my area do not treat such issues, as it is considered an emergency. I called the emergency Veterinary clinic and they said they are full. My dog is not showing any unusual behavior. He looks normal. Will the used chewing gum just pass through his system with feces ?   Thanks

Hello!  I'm afraid that Xylitol toxicity is indeed a 'thing' and should be taken very seriously.  It is usually an emergency.    Often the emergency vets will triage the case and, once they have all the details, use resources available to them to work out how urgent this particular case is and what treatment may be required.  We would strongly advise calling the clinic back and asking for the case to be triaged, relative to the other cases awaiting their attention.  Whereabouts in the world are you?   Please do let us know how you get on.
