Hi all, I took my dog (male/intact/six years old/Pomeranian) into the emergency vet yesterday because I noticed he had some swelling and protuding of his anus. Upon examination I was told he looked normal but I believe he was clenching his anus at the time so I showed the vet some pictures and she still insisted that she could not see any abnormalities. I was hoping someone could provide insight into what this might be. Thank you so much for reading
Given that I had never met your dog before and just seen these photos, I also think that this anus appears to be normal (I'll come back to that). However, there seems to be hair missing from right around the outside of the anus and I wonder how this came about? Perhaps the loss of this hair might have made the anus look more swollen than you remember it? This begs the question why the loss of the hair and if not recently trimmed etc, I would have some suggestions about that. However, I would like to offer my disclaimer here because I am not your vet; although the anus looks normal to me on a photograph, this is not to dismiss your concerns - photographs do not show everything. Your vet for example, would have checked the anal glands and the quality of the skin etc. and tried to understand what has changed. If you are still unsatisfied, it may pay to look at the anus of other dogs of a similar breed and if still not convinced - or if your dog appears to be rubbing or scratching the anus - then this needs to be reported back to your vet who may look again or arrange a second opinion.
The missing hair is from when he was shaved on Monday to have his anal glands expressed ( I probably should have mentioned that in the original post, apologies) The emergency vet was our second opinion as we had brought him in to his usual vet a few days after his anal gland expression because we were concerned about the swelling but again, he was clenched up because he was scared. So the vet told us he looked fine and gave him an antihistamine injection for any itching. Currently his anus doesn't appear to bother him, no itching or licking or scooting, but it does throb and pulsate quite a bit.
