Hi 👋🏻 I need some advice or suggestions for my 9 year old Shorkie. She hates being in the car so much. She literally shakes and pants so bad that it makes me feel bad for taking her with us on road trips. I can’t board her because she has really bad separation anxiety. I have 2 other dogs and they don’t do this in the car. They curl up and go to sleep. I can’t help the road trips because my husband is military and his family and my family live in different states. What can I do to help her with this? Thanks in advance

Hello!  That sounds very unpleasant for you and your Shorkie.    How long has the problem been going on?  The shorter the time, perhaps the easier to do something about it and I would recommend speaking to a canine behaviourist who uses positive techniques (not any form of punishment, ever!) to see if you can find a way to make this work.  However, I would expect it to be a slow, long process - you are basically asking them to take a dog who is scared of something and make them not afraid of it any more.    This is extremely difficult and may involve putting them in car and giving them an enormous fuss every day for a month or two, before you even get around to putting the engine on.   In very severe cases, it may be that it is kinder to re-home the pet to a situation that doesn't involve massive car rides, or alternatively to take a plane or the train. Best of luck
