Hello!  It's important to know whether there is itching or not.  Itching can suggest fleas, allergic skin disease, compulsive behaviour, underlying pain etc and scratching does lead to hair loss. Non itchy hair loss has a wide variety of causes including demodex mites, ringworm (which is  an infectious fungal hair loss - please wear gloves to handle your dog as this can affect people) and hormonal disease amongst others. Your vets may have to conduct tests in order to be sure what they're looking at, so we would advise making an appointment and meanwhile, limiting your dogs' exposure to children or immunocompromised people. Wishing you both all the best

Ah!  I have just noticed where this is in relation to the body.  Full or blocked anal glands can be another cause of self-inflycted ('itchy') hair loss.
