Bladder control

My 10.5-year-old German Shepherd has had back surgery on his C1 & C2 a month ago. Since then he has lost control of his bladder. He constantly urinates and we are changing pads 3 to 4 times an hour. We try to express his bladder without success. I have a feeling this is neurological and will take time to reprogram itself. In the meantime is there anything I can do? Any meds out there to help?

Hello - there seems to be something missing from this post - what does the neurologist say?  Are they doing post op checks?  Have they not asked you to get in touch them them or your vet if anything changes?  I don't know what surgery your dog had on those vertebrae or why, let alone whether or not this is a permanent change, but sometimes bladder dysfunction is permanent (and sometimes it can be a new change, unrelated to previous surgery) so it seems a good idea to flag this up!

There are incontinence medications available, but of course there are many difference types of urinary incontinence.  I think the first thing to do, before any causation -and therefore treatment - is assumed, would be have the vet examine your dog.  Please don't try to express a bladder without your vets guidance - it is easy to damage them.   Do let us know how you get on.
