Good morning, My 8 YO Male Lab Mix 50lbs, ate the middle part out of my wife's underwear from 5 pair. We have found all of the underwear missing the middle and taken pictures of them, to make sure all of them come out if he passes them. But my question is, this happened 24-36 hours ago, and he is acting completely normal. He has eaten all of his meals, continues to drink, and has had 3 bowel movements since we realized he did this. He only had 1 Diarrhea movement, the other two were large and normal. He went outside this morning, and ate some grass, and threw up bile and grass. He has not thrown up anything else. He has done this in the past, when he was 1 or 2, but grew out of it. I am nervous, and concerned at the amount of  fabric he ate, and need some suggestions. Should I just wait it out? I have considered feeding him Chicken and Rice to try and help push it out. If we hadn't of found the underwear, we would have had no idea this happened. He is acting completely normal. Please advise!

Hello - this is actually surprisingly common, and it's frequently a labrador.  What will happen, depends partly on the shape and consistency of the thing that was eaten (be as explicit with your vet as you need to be, they're honestly not judging your underwear), partly on the shape of the individual's stomach / intestines, partly on any food eaten with it and partly on pure luck.  Whether and when to intervene tends to be a subjective decision and is best made with your vet for the individual case in front of them.  I"m afraid that the dog seeming completely normal at the time can be typical, because foreign bodies can settle in the stomach for a while, sometimes a long long while, or otherwise pass through.  If they leave the stomach, its a concern whether they will pass through the guts or get stuck, causing a blockage.  Ive seen foreign bodies that the owner attests must have been in the stomach for years, suddenly cause a problem; I've known dogs pass things that the owner never knew had been eaten.  But I've also seen foreign bodies that have nearly killed - and indeed, killed - animals.  Good questions for your vet include, 'What do you think will happen?'  'What could go wrong?'  'How can we minimise any risks?'  'Would you reccommend endoscopy at this stage?'  'What would you do if this were your dog?'   Search through the blog for 'foreign body' and 'ex-lap' might be useful.  I hope that something there helps.
