Blood in poo

My cockapoo (10 years old) has been passing looser stalls with what appears to be red mucus. We suspect this is blood. She has had no diet changes, is drinking normally. Perhaps is a bit quieter in herself but it’s hard to tell if this is due to age. For the past 2 weeks she has had bouts of diarrhoea but this hasn’t been consistent. Sometimes with this red mucus, sometimes not.  She is up to date on her flee and worming. Today we noticed a puddle of just red gunge/mucus on the sofa mixed with brown. We suspect she hasn’t been able to control her bowel. This has never happened to her before. Any advice would be much appreciated

Hello and thankyou for the well-illustrated and clear question.  I'm sorry to hear about these changes, which are somewhat generalised in that they could be "something or nothing"; they could be attributed to various minor problems occuring concurrently, but unfortunately that could have a much more serious connotations.  Serious examples include bleeding into the bowel due to a blood clotting problem which is also affecting other systems (eg liver) and thereby her energy levels; a lump in the gastero-intestinal tract or pancreatitis.  Two weeks is quite a long time so we would recommend a trip to the vets, who can examine her and take a much more detailed history in order to help you to decide whether further investigations are necessary.  Wishing you all the very best of luck.
