Oh poor boy!
Unfortunately, there's not much information available on the safety of these formulations in dogs, as even dogs who don't often self groom do tend to have a lick if you put something foreign on their toes, especially if the toes are already sore... So, assuming the skin isn't broken or weepy I think keeping them clean with salty water or a mild skin disinfectant (like very dilute chlorhexidine) would be the best place to start, and if they are really bothering him, start to weep or ooze, or the redness doesn't resolve rapidly, then get him looked at by your vet.
