My 7 year old Miniature Dachshund has been diagnosed with IVDD. My vet said it is possible for her to recover from and he wants her to go on increasingly long walks from starting at 15 minutes and increasing by 5 minutes every 4 days, until she reaches 1 hour. I asked if 2 half hour walks was what was intended and he said no, one full hour walk all at once. I just wanted to get a 2nd opinion on this bc it seems like a very long time for such a little dog to be walking, she is only 11 lbs and has such short legs, I feel like this will be so exhausting for her. But I want what’s best for my dog so if this is what most vets would recommend then that is what I am going to try to do. She was also on some muscle relaxers and pain pills for a few weeks and he said he doesn’t think she needs those anymore since she doesn’t seem to be in pain and he’s said she isn’t doing that bad compared to some other dachshunds that have a similar problem.

Hello.   I'm afraid that this is a first opinion site and as such, we do.not give second opinions.  Indeed I have less rather than more information than your vet, not knowing basic context such as how long the treatment has been going on for, or what caused it the disease or to what degree  I think that some good questions you need to ask your vet, however, include; 1) can this condition completely recover 2) what is happening in this case and what does the projected future look like and 3) on what is the vet basic their assessment of how much pain your dog is in and how can you monitor this at home?  Perhaps there is an objective pain score?  4) what are the advantages Vs disadvantages of treating the pain at the moment?  5) on what are decisions about exercise based?   I hope that this opens up a useful conversation. Sometimes, when a lot of information is given at once, asking for a copy of the clinical notes outlining their answers can be helpful.
