raw sores on outer lip

I took notice of this on Wednesday, two raw looking sores on one side of my dog's mouth, on the outside of his lip. 
I tried to get him into the vet but couldn't get him seen until today (Monday). It now looks like this:
the vet said he is treating it as an infection first and gave me topical gentamicin ointment to put on it for a week and to bring him back next Monday to see if there is any improvement, and if not, to proceed a different course of action from there.
I'm really worried because he brought up the possibility that it's a tumor and that it's cancer.
Just wanted another opinion too.
Right now my dog is eating and drinking normally. When I apply the ointment, it doesn't seem to hurt or bother him. He does have some foul breath.
