Oh Im sorry, I missed this one. (My day for answering is Saturday UK time actually, which has only just begun for me, but I get going early sometimes). This was a me-factor not a you-factor, so please don't let it affect your confidence.
I don't necessarily think that this is infected and the truth is that you can't tell from looking. We used to think things were infected when they 'looked manky' (Yorkshire slang term) or oozed pus or whatever, but we now know that this is no longer true. On top of that, we are having problems with antibiotics, many of which are simply not needed most of the time they are used. Thus far I would have agreed with your vet. If it still does not heal, they might have the extra option of swabbing it and looking down the microscope for bacteria. Thus way, they know what bacteria are there and can use an appropriate antibiotic. If you type 'antibiotics' into the searchbar of the blog, you can read all about this. Meanwhile I'm glad your vet gave a pain killer; that looks sore!
