Question from Julie Wilshaw:
At what age do Staffies stop having seasons?
Answer from Shanika Winters:
Hi Julie, you have asked an interesting question for all owners of entire (unspayed) female dogs. In short entire bitches (female dogs) do not stop having seasons. I will discuss what seasons are, signs that your bitch is in season, when seasons tend to start and what happens as your bitch gets older.
Table of contents
What exactly is a ‘season’ in dogs?
A season is what we call the time when a bitch is able to get pregnant (reproduce). An average season lasts approximately three weeks, during this time the vulva (outside part of the bitches vagina) becomes pink and swollen, there is often a bloody discharge for around 9 days, this is followed by ovulation (eggs being released from the ovaries). After this time, things start to settle back to normal.
Bitches usually have one to two seasons a year. During a season bitches give off pheromones, which attract entire male dogs from a long-distance away. Also at or near the time of ovulation the bitch may stand with her tail held up and to the side to allow herself to be mated. Some bitches can become aggressive during their season, others more clingy.
Typical stages of a dog’s season
- Anoestrous – not in season, around 6-8months
- Proestrous – around 9 days, vulva swells, vaginal bleeding
- Oestrous – around 9 days, usually stop bleeding allows mating
- Dioestrous – around 2-3months, high levels of the hormone progesterone which can sometimes lead to false pregnancies
The above is just a simple example of an average season, there can be lots of variation in how a bitch behaves and shows its season and of the length of the individual parts of the season.
When do seasons start and finish?
Seasons usually start at around six months of age but can be as late as one year to eighteen months. It is often thought that small bitches usually start their seasons sooner than larger bitches of dog as they take longer to mature.
As your bitch gets older it seems reasonable to assume that they will stop having seasons, in humans what we call the menopause. However in the case of bitches this does not happen; female dogs continue to have seasons for their entire lives and therefore could potentially get pregnant.
So why do so many dog owners think that their bitches have stopped having seasons?
This is because as bitches get older they do not always show the external or behavioural signs that they are actually having a season. This can sometimes be referred to as a ‘silent season’. It is important to remember that even though your bitch may not be showing signs of being in season, she could still get pregnant if mated by an entire male dog.
Why is it worth considering getting your older bitch spayed (neutered)?
The obvious reason would be that you did not intend to breed from your bitch. But it is also worth considering hormone-related disease processes that can happen in older entire bitches; such as pyometra (womb infection), uterine cancer (womb tumours) and mammary tumours(breast cancer). The diseases mentioned are all influenced by the female sex hormones which will still be produced on a regular basis if your bitch is entire.
A lot of dog owners are worried about having surgery carried out as their dogs become older, this should always be discussed with your vet or veterinary nurse and all the risks weighed up against the potential benefits to your dog.
I hope that my answer has helped to explain why even though it may seem like your bitch has stopped having seasons that she actually is still having them and will continue to do so for the rest of her life.

My t 10 year old girl dog keeps coming in to session she stops for 2 days & stars again
This is called a “split heat” and can be a sign of an underlying hormonal or even potentially cancerous issue. I’d definitely get her checked over by your vet and bloods taken for a hormone panel: or get her spayed and the ovaries removed.
I have a 9 year old female pittbull. She didn’t go into heat for 2 years, we moved across the country between those two years, and then just moved across the country again a week ago and she suddenly went into heat. Im just wondering if there is any particular reason this could be? She went and got her shots and health check about 2 months ago and was given a clean bill of health, and we plan to have her spayed as soon as we get a hold on our new living situation.
Stress and malnutrition are the most common reasons for dogs to skip a heat, or to have silent heats. However, other reproductive disorders such as some ovarian cysts can also cause issues like this. If you’re going to get her spayed, I’d recommend mentioning it to the vets so they can check in the process that there isn’t anything nasty going on; and if her heat doesn’t end normally, definitely time for a vet check sooner rather than later.
My staffy is 9 months and has been bleeding heavy for 6 weeks is that normal?i dont have money for the vet
Definitely not – so I think it’s definitely time to try and find a charity that can help get her seen by a vet; or even one that will pay for her to be neutered, as this will probably solve the issue.
I have a female went into heat April 30 and tied with a male on the May 8th & 10th. Today June 13 I seen my male penetrate but not tied. Could she be having a split heat?
It sounds likely – there’s not much else that would make her stand twice in 2 weeks.
Hi! I have a question if someone could help me. I have a female golden retriever puppy that is 12 and a half weeks old and today she’s been bleeding out of her vagina. She’s been eating and drinking fine, and doesn’t seem to be in pain. Just been licking more down there. Does anyone know what it may be?
hat would be very early for a first season. The most likely explanations would be that it’s a really bad urinary tract infection; that it’s vaginitis; or that there’s a hormonal issue triggering a precocious puberty. I definitely think a vet check would be a good idea!
I have a 12year old American pit bull she has never had pups and I never had her spade but she has started 2 have blood cloths
Blood clots passed from the vagina are really serious – vet ASAP, this is often a sign of an open pyometra.
My pug girl is 6 she is on season but is still bleeding dark red blood 8 weeks now.Csn anyone tell me why please? Thanks
That’s not normal – I’d DEFINITELY get her checked by your vet, as this could even be an open pyometra.
My female dog is now 11 yrs old, shes been spayed over the past 10 yrs now. She started randomly bleeding earlier tonight. She’s Not be able to go in to heat. What is happening with her?
If we’re lucky, it’s “just” a urinary tract infection, but I’d very strongly recommend a vet check as soon as possible, because this could also be a bladder stone, or even a cancer.
Is it safe to have my seven year old pugzu spayed. I have had her given to me. The vet says she is a very healthy dob
I can’t see any reason why not, if she’s healthy – and it would be a good idea, as from about 6-7 years old the risk of pyometra increases dramatically.
My westie bitch is nearly 9,she has only ever had 1 litter of pups,I have a male Westoe who is 11yrs old also,I have always been careful when she’s in heat but I don’t know if he’s caught her as she’s putting on weight..can they get pregnant at this age and will she be OK?
Yes she can get pregnant at that age – dogs don’t have a menopause. There are however much higher risks in carrying a litter and giving birth at that age, so I’d strongly recommend making an appointment with your vet and getting her checked over to see what her health is like – and also to confirm whether or not she is in pup.
I have a bordouex how many days into season should I get her bloods done to know when she wil be ready to breed thanks
It depends which bloods you’re talking about? If you mean progesterone blood, then it would be most common to do the first test 6 or 7 days into heat.
A friends lab is 9 yrs old. She started having puppies 2 days ago.. she is having 1 puppy a day. Making today puppy number 3. Is this normal?
Definitely not – that is a very abnormally long labour, get her veterinary attention ASAP
My 10 yr. old lab/pit mix hasn’t gone into heat since her sister passed away back in Feb. (No bloody discharge)
Is she going through silent heats now or should I be more worried that something serious is going on?
Silent heats are a possibility, but any change in oestrus behaviour in a dog of that age is worth getting checked out – ovarian tumours aren’t common but start to be seen more and more often after 8 or 9 years of age; and there’s always the risk of an undiagnosed pyo brewing up if there is a hormonal issue. So I’d be recommending a vet check if you think she would normally have cycled by now and definitely hasn’t shown any signs; and meanwhile, keeping a really close eye on her for any signs of altered drinking or appetite and discharge.
I have a female staffordshire bull terrier, she is almost 10, since her first season she has never cleaned her own season blood, i tried to encourage her thinking it was a natural thing, but she has never done it.. is there something wrong? After speaking on it to friends they find it strange that she never has, but she has never had puppies or anything so shes never had to clean up after them. Thanks for reading.
No, it doesn’t indicate a problem: some dogs do and some don’t – it’s very variable!
I have a Sharpei coming up to 8 months. She is experiencing her first heat which started 3 weeks ago tomorrow! Is this normal to last this long ? She is still bleeding but not extremely heavy but still swollen. I know it can last 2-4 weeks just wanted some reassurance.
It’s unusual, but not unheard of, especially in a first season. If it goes over 3 1/2 – 4 weeks, or if she shows any signs of illness, though (especially increased thirst, or vomiting), then get her to urgent veterinary attention, as occasionally the initial season was silent and what looks like the season turns out to be a pyo.
I have had my dog for three year and she was about 2 when we got her she was already fixed when we got her and so she has never bled but all of the sudden today I noticed that she is bleeding what is going on?
The most likely explanation in a neutered dog is that she has a urinary infection, but there are a couple of other conditions that can cause this: in any case, definitely vet time!
My 14 year old Chihuahua has been bleeding now for almost two weeks and it’s been very heavy the entire time and she seems very off balance and confused for the last two days I’m really worried what can I do? I can’t afford a vet visit at the moment
She needs URGENT veterinary attention – whether that is privately or through a charity clinic: while there are other causes, what you have described would be consistent with a pyometra leading into sepsis.
My pet is 14yrs old and she is on her heat cycle since more than a month now… one side of her breast behind is lumpy n swollen hanging down… vet says it’s Age related issues can’t do much now…
Also any medication you can suggest that may stop the heat at least????
There are a range of medications that your vet can prescribe to end the heat, as well as surgical sterilisation; however, they’re all prescription only so you will need to discuss that with them!
Greetings, I couldn’t help but notice the use of the word “bitch” in your article. Canis lupus familiaris is the scientific name for them, but “dog” is a more simple and less vulgar term. The post has no need for this much usage of the term “bitch” and makes you look like a person with an IQ comparable to a Struthio camelus. I suggest fixing this error so it looks more professional in the future.
The correct professional term for a female dog here in the UK is “bitch”. I am sorry if you are offended by this, but on this side of the Atlantic that is strictly speaking correct. When this blog was written (2014, if you look) there was no debate about this.
Now, it is true that there has been more recent debate about the terminology, and my colleague Joe recently wrote an article about this.
However, it is still common parlance in the industry, and so there is no reason for you to be defamatory towards my colleagues – or if you prefer, don’t be an Equus africanus.
My black lab/german short hair mix is 8 years old. She has not had a heat cycle in a year and a half. And she is plumping up like she has been spayed. We are very careful with her when she did go into heat and not let her around male dogs so we know that isn’t the issue. I’ve heard that dogs don’t go into menopause.
No they don’t – but they can develop diseases (such as ovarian cancer, among many other possibilities) that can mimic the effects of being spayed in the early stages. I’d definitely get her checked out by your vet!
My 4 year old kittu has got more than 1 year of season….. why this happened
Do you mean she’s been in season solidly for a year? If so, I think she definitely needs veterinary attention as that’s certainly not normal!
My 16 year old yorkie has been in season for 3 weeks now , the blood is still red . She also is peeing every 2 seconds up all night hasn’t slept for 24 hrs now . Phoned vet they said its not an emergency to call back in 2 days . I am exhausted what do I do and is thos serious . Thank you
Bleeding for that long is definitely unusual, and I would be concerned that there might be some issues there, especially at that age. While it might not be an emergency, it really does need seeing – so I’d advise making a normal hours appointment and getting her checked over – good luck!
My female Chihuahua she bleed for 7days stoped didn’t swell now this is two weeks later now my male wants her but she won’t let him mount her she play fight but if he tries mounting she attacks him please explain still not swollen or bleeding
A split season might be one possibility, but there are others, ranging from infections (that are confusing him with their smell) to persistent pro-oestrus from a tumour, and everything in between. Definitely one for a vet check I think!
have three german shepherds. all girls. one 8, one 6, and one 4. the 4 and 8 year old go into heat and bleed at the same time each spring. my 6 year old, has never bled or acted like she was in heat ever. didn’t know this wasn’t normal. none are fixed. could there be something wrong?
There could be, but she might be having silent seasons: I would be inclined to talk to your vet about getting her checked out though, because silent oestrus can indicate hormonal problems; there’s also the possibility of other internal abnormalities (although they’re unlikely to affect her, it could cause issues later on).
My bully have a good 4 cycles , 6 months apart. Then shemissed one and then got pregnant last February. She bled in September 2021 and hasn’t bled again. Is it normal for the seasons to change after a litter?
No it isn’t – I’d definitely advise a vet check to make sure there’s nothing else going on there. She might just have had a silent season (it happens sometimes), but I’d still advise a check over.
Good day my German Shepherd female is 2 years old but wasn’t on Heat yet what can the problem be please let me know
There are lots of possibilities; it might just be that she’s waiting for the spring (a lot of dogs will cycle for the first time in spring); another option is that she’s had her first heat but it has been a “silent heat” which is very very common for the first cycle. Other options include ovarian cysts, intersex conditions, and even early onset tumours, but you’d need a vet check and possibly a hormone panel to determine exactly what’s going on.
My bitch is on heat she not eating is it normal
It does happen sometimes, as long as she’s still drinking and she’s definitely still in heat then it’s not normally a huge concern. If there’s any discharge from her vulva, though, if her season finished a few weeks ago then came back, or if she has any other symptoms, then this could be serious so seek veterinary advice ASAP.
Is it necessary to mate the female dog?.
Does it die if it doesn’t get mated
No, neither dogs nor cats will die if they are not mated. That only applies to ferrets among all the domestic animals.
I have a female chiwauwa who just had a litter 6 weeks ago and she is showing she’s in heat again. Is this caused by her getting older?
Not really, that’s pretty unusual – I’d strongly advise a vet check ASAP.
I have a dog usually she just spots when on her period but she’s bleeding real heavy now. She’s about 7 or 8 could she be getting ready to stop bleeding all together or she got out couple weeks ago could she be pregnant.
Dogs don’t usually stop having seasons, so that’s not likely. Pregnancy isn’t impossible, but I’d be very worried about an infection – which is very common in entire dogs of this age and potentially life-threatening. Get her checked out by your vet ASAP.
My 7 year old Dogue de Bordeaux has started bleeding 2 weeks after her last season is this ok or could there be problems
That’s not normal, it suggests at best a split-season, and potentially an infection. I’d say vet check ASAP.
Hi
My 12 year old Patterdale Queenie has been on heat for 3&1/2 weeks and bleeding quite heavily. She is eating normal and still wanting to play and run around. There is no swelling on her tummy. Should I be concerned and take her to vet?
I think so – that’s a long time to be in full oestrus, and at that age, the risk of complications is quite a bit higher.
Hello, I have a female Border Collie (10.5 months), who went into heat for the first time six weeks ago and her vulva is still swollen. I took her to the vet a week ago and he said that he was surprised that she was still in season after five weeks, but confirmed that she was. It’s now been six weeks and no change. Is this normal? Thank you for your advice.
No, that’s pretty unusual – first seasons can go on a while but that does seem a long time. Other possibilities include vaginitis or hormonal imbalances, so it might be worth having another chat with your vet.
I have a female Great Dane she is a year and 4 months and still has not went into her first heat cycle is this normal ? Should I be concerned
For a dog that large, this is within the normal range – personally, I’d be comfortable leaving it until 18-24 months before I was concerned, assuming she’s developing normally and is healthy in all other respects.
Hi there
My 10 month staffy bitch still not been heated . Is it normal that she never been period at 10 months old?
Not uncommon; many larger dogs don’t come into seasons for the first time until their second year.
My dog is 9 years old and she went into her heat cycle 3 weeks ago. And the last 2 days she is bleeding really bad. She walks and she leaves a trail of blood. I can’t get her into the vet until September. She is 9 years old. Is she on her last heat cycle for her age
No, there is no last heat cycle: many dogs will cycle every year until they die.
However, she really shouldn’t be bleeding that much for that long: she needs veterinary treatment sooner, as there could be something very serious going on there.
My female dog is 2 years old and hasn’t mated yet, will it be a problem if we mate her later?
No, although I would always advise a full health check before mating anyway, and a first litter no later than 4 years of age.
My baby is 5 year old and she is not having her period since 2 years, what to do?
Dog’s don’t get periods like humans do – the process is biologically somewhat different.
In most cases, they have their seasons, but they are “quiet” or “silent” and the dog cleans up after herself so there is no obvious evidence.
That said, genuinely missing seasons can be due to underlying disease processes; and if you’re not planning to breed from her, I would advise you to talk to your vet about getting her spayed to prevent a potentially life-threatening pyometra.
My dalmatian is 6 yrs old. She came into heat in April and is still bleeding now. Any reason for concern?
Yes, that is a very long time. I’d strongly advise a vet check, ideally within the next 24 hours, as in some middle-aged to older dogs these lingering seasons can rapidly turn into a pyometra which is life threatening. If she gets lethargic, starts drinking more or being sick, then it’s potentially an emergency.
Hello, my dog is almost 10 years old, not spayed. I got her just recently and last week noticed that two of her breasts are swollen, can it be atributed to her going into heat soon?
If only two of them are swollen and not the others, and she isn’t spayed, I’d be very concerned about breast cancer. Get a vet check ASAP – 50% of breast cancers in dogs are malignant but if treated rapidly and aggressively, the prognosis is much better.
Hi, I have a 1 yr and 4 mo old miniature boxer. Not sure if she was the runt or if she’s just a little small for her breed. she’s now in her 2nd heat. 1st one was in Nov. but this one seems to be a bit heavier than her first. Is that normal for her 2nd(or upcoming ones) to be heavier than her first? She seems to be acting normal and everything.
In many (maybe most?) bitches, the first heat is unusual – often unusually light. The second and subsequent ones are typically more obvious and/or heavier.
My bitch is at day 31 of her season and still has nt ovulated is this normal will she still ovulate or not has anyone else had this problem before
31 days into full oestrus without ovulation? That’s definitely not normal – time for a fairly urgent health check, as this might suggest a serious ovarian disorder.
can some one tell me why my dog has stop her piriod about 3days she has 6yrs
Lots of possible causes – but always best to get a vet check as some are potentially serious.
Hi, is it normal for my puppy (Poodle) to have season after 4-5 years? She don’t have any season since she 4 years old. She is now 9 years old.
It’s not really normal for her to go 4-5 years without one – so I’d strongly advise a vet check to see if there are any underlying health issues.
I have a min pin, she is 14 years old and has had a litter of 6 puppies 11 years ago. I never had her spayed and have never had any issues with her going into heat. But this heat, has been bad, she’s flowing very heavy….should I be worried?
At 14 that’s definitely a worry, and can be a sign of a number of underlying problems. I think definitely vet time…
Hi my Staffordshire bull terrier approx 10yrs old we have had her 5yrs always had 2 seasons February and august, last year she was late was December instead of August, this year started January for 2wks nothing for 2wks but suddenly started again today very dark blood with clots. She is absolutely fine in herself. My question is, is this normal and would peoples advice be get her spaded.
That’s not normal no – any change to the discharge when a dog is in season is potentially worrying. Personally, yes, I would have her neutered, as at this age the risk of a life-threatening pyometra becomes very high.
My dog is a miniature pinscher she is 4 years old and has not mated ever. She has been in heat but here recently i noticed she hasn’t over the past year. What could cause this?
There are a lot of possible issues, including a one-off silent oestrus (happens sometimes and we don’t always know why). Alternatively, the cause may be more serious – ovarian disease, even ovarian cancer. I’d suggest a reproductive health check up for her with your vet. Or, if you’re not planning to breed her, consider neutering, especially if her reproductive system may be malfunctioning, as this might increase the risk of disease down the line.
My dog is 12 years old. Can she still get her period?
Dogs don’t actually get a “period”, its a very different biological process.
However, yes, she can still come into season and get pregnant (although probably not a good idea to let her at that age!). In general, I’d strongly suggest spaying and entire bitch of that age, as the risk of life-threatening pyometra increases with age.
My female is 4 years old and has mated once on her first visible season after that she had 2 more visible seasons but failed to mate and ever since she has not had any signs in the past year since the last visible season. Her first mate and puppies where at 28 months
It might be a hormonal issue, or she might be having silent seasons. Time to talk to your vet about the underlying cause, if you want to breed from her, or getting her spayed if you don’t.
So my dog timber entered her 3rd heat she’s 3 now had big changes this year with a move there are all kinds of neighborhood dogs now. Before her seasons weed light and she would be lack of a better term moody. Now enter the situation now shell me 3yrs old in April and last night out of nowhere, on top of the normal stuff she starts panting and drinking a lot of water and she’s peeing everywhere. She’s potty trained, is this normal if the instinct to bred is strong. Sorry for the drawn out post just had a lot of conflicting answers.
Sudden onset panting and thirst isn’t normal – I’d strongly advise an urgent call to your vet for advice. It may suggest infection which can be life-threatening.
I have a female Westie she was the runt and has had 3 heats my male has breed her but still not puppys could she not be able to get pregnent . As she is a smaller then she should be could this be why she hasnt had a litter.
Infertility is possible – and “runts” are reportedly more likely to have other underlying hormonal problems. However, I wouldn’t bank on it – she might get in pup next time! I think a reproductive workup with your vet might be a good idea too – some underlying diseases can cause infertility and it might be wise to get those ruled out.
Hi, my springer bitch is 3 1/2, she had her first season at 22 weeks it was short and light, then another big season at 15 months, since then her seasons have been silent, we took her for tests and she’s fully functional but just has silent seasons, we’ve been waiting to breed her so used dates and ovulation tests to track her season, we bred her and got a tie on October 16th but the mating was unsuccessful, she then came back into season on 6th December, this one is not a silent season, it is full on with noticeable bleeding and swelling, shes on day 13 and is still spotting blood, we’ve been testing her for ovulation and she’s still not ovulating, I’ve been reading and there’s so much mixed information on split season, should she ovulate on the second part of a split season? Is it likely she will always have silent/split season? We’re desperate to breed her, shes an amazing specimen and we want to keep a daughter of hers, thanks
Usually in a split oestrus, pro-oestrus will start again within 4 weeks or so, so 8 weeks seems a long time. There are reports that some bitches may ovulate in the second half, but my understanding is that many do not. However, most split oestrus events are one-offs; the subsequent cycles are generally normal. Possible causes include hypothyroidism and some ovarian problems, so it might be worth getting a referral to a veterinary theriogenologist or endocrinologist; alternatively, see what happens with her next cycle. If that is abnormal as well, then definitely seek a referral. Good luck!
Hi, my 17/18 year old dog has been bleeding for a month and a half and has gradually lost weight even though she is eating perfectly fine… before this she hadn’t been in season for quite a while.
DEFINITELY time for an URGENT vet check. This is not normal and in a dog of that age, the longer it’s left the more serious it becomes. Possibilities include an open pyometra, vaginal infection, or even uterine tumours.
Hi, my 7 year old Staffie started her last heat cycle on the 30th October 2020 and she is still bleeding 9th December 2020 it did start to come to an end but has got heavy again and the blood is very dark almost black which is worrying but she is still her normal sassie self and does not have any other symptoms what should I do ?
That is not normal – vet time as soon as you can get an appointment.
Actually my bitch got heat cycle for 4 times but after then suddenly it stopped and we haven’t even got her spayed, she even developed hypothyroidism and gets recurring hotspots one after the other. My query is why she isn’t getting heat cycle?
Hypothyroidism often disrupts normal cycling, as thyroid hormones are involved in so many different metabolic processes. Alternatively, there may be some underlying hypothalamic or pituitary disease that is causing both hypothyroidism and reproductive hormone anomalies. It’s probably best to talk to your vet about the situation as there are several possibilities!
My female dog is over 10 years old. She is bleeding more than normal.
Get her checked by your vet as soon as possible – dogs don’t go through the menopause like humans, but they can develop pyometra, uterine cancer, and various other diseases that are potentially life-threatening.
Hi there i need some advice… My girl is 3 and she started to bleed yesterday, but today ( day 2) shes not bleeding at all… This is the first time this has happened since she got her first… I dont know what to do…
It sounds like she might be in season then – all dogs are different! But if in doubt, get her checked out by your vet to rule out medical issues such as vaginitis.
Hi my female dog she’s an English bulldog half bully , she’s already 2 years and had only gotten in heat once why is it taking so long for her to get into heat again? I have another dog that she’s almost going to be three and she has already gotten 3 times into heat she’s a German Shepard.
There are huge variations between individuals and breeds. Some dogs naturally only cycle every 18 months; others more frequently – the average for a large breed is every 6-12 months, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some who go longer! If in doubt, get your vet to check her over for signs of underlying health problems that could be delaying oestrus.
I have a 9 year old Doberman female that has been fixed since she was 6 months old I noticed when I took her out this morning that when she pees it a bloody and thick she keeps going around the yard trying to pee sometimes it comes out and other times nothing what’s wrong with my girl
It could be a urinary tract infection – but we’d strongly advise a vet check!
My dog bled for for 5 days then she stopped for 3 days then she started again when do I count her heat cycle from? The very first day or the day she started bleeding again and also started swelling up? She is french bulldog.
With a split cycle like that it’s really hard to be certain – I’d advise talking to your vet about vaginal cytology to determine exactly where she is.
I have a friend who has a small Yorkshire terrier she is now 5years old and she has stopped coming into season can u plz tell me why it’s been about 2years since last one please help
That isn’t usual, and there are lots of possibilities – ranging from “silent” seasons (that don’t show) to some rather nasty types of cancer. I’d suggest they get a health check from her vet to rule out anything nasty.
rescued an older bitch she was used for breeding – i said to my vet about getting her speyed he said there was no need she would not come into season she is too old – need to change vet she is in season and I have male dogs and it is hell – my bitches were always neutered before they came into season and I am furious at my vet he is not living with a dog in heat and male dogs – i would have understood if he had said not cutting her open to see if she has been speyed which I would have accepted – this is the 2nd day and I have 3 weeks to go – the sprays you buy dont work – – consoling myself with the fact not permanent 3 weeks i think they ae in season – she will be speyed in October – read you need to leave it 3 months after the season – i read that bitches come into season at all ages but longer in between – why my vet said she would not come into season I don’t know – useless – he also knows I have male dogs
I am wanting to purchase a 2 and a half year old toy poodle but she hasn’t come into heat yet. I intend to have her speyed as she is very small 5lbs or so and I don’t want to breed her. What can be causing her not to come into season? She seems fit and healthy otherwise.
If she’s very small, that can cause delayed onset of seasons – female wolves usually come into season the first spring (or sometimes autumn) after they reach a genetically set body weight, and our dogs have inherited similar systems. There might also be other underlying problems – however, the evidence now seems to suggest that if she’s reached adult weight, then spaying her before the first season is absolutely fine, and significantly reduces the risk of mammary cancer later. If there is an underlying hormonal abnormality as well, better out than in, as it were.
However – I’d strongly suggest talking to the dog’s vet if the current owner will give you permission. If she won’t that suggests there’s something else going on.
Hi there
I have a dog who is now 10 years old, and she didn’t get her period until she is 5.
When she first started getting her period they weren’t to bad. Now she is getting her period like twice a year but each time is like three months long. Her period are super heavy each time. We didn’t get her fixed because we were told that the vet won’t fix them after the age of 5.
Remember, a dog’s seasons aren’t the same as human menstruation – the biological mechanisms for the blood-tinged discharge are very different. Heavy bleeding in season may be normal but I would very strongly advise a vet check because she should not be bleeding for 3 months at a time – this is highly abnormal and may suggest a more serious condition such as cancer of the uterus.
Can a female be in heat with no blood discharge at all , timing is that she should be coming in, she is 5 years old
Yes, if they’re clean they can remove the discharge before anyone sees it! It’s not always that dramatic.
Hello ive got a 6yr old shepherd who comes into season but has no interest in mating with the male dog she just jumps around tand wants to play
The “play” stage is characteristic of pro-oestrus, the phase immediately before the fertile period. Some dogs are just a bit more shy than others, but if you’re worried, your vet will be able to do tests to determine if there are any hormonal imbalances.
I have a lab of 6.5 years. From 1year her period has been stopped. She had pyometra at the age of 4years.Open pyometra. But doctor gave her antibiotics and she cured.but now I wanted to spay her.Can she be spayed at this age?
Yes, there’s no maximum age, as long as she’s healthy enough for the anaesthetic (6.5 shouldn’t be an issue!).
My westie is going on 7 months and has not had a period yet. Is this normal?
It can be, yes; dogs USUALLY come into season between 5 and 8 months of age for the first time, but it is very variable. In addition, the first cycle can be quite “quiet” and easy to miss, especially if she’s quite clean. If she hasn’t had one by 12 months, definitely worth a check up.
We have a 17 year old WCS entire. Is it normal for an older dog to bleed for longer?
No smell or unusual discharge. No behavioural changes but there has been a slight increase in water intake and urination.
I would advise you to contact your vet immediately – while that might just be age related variation, what you’ve described could also be consistent with an early pyometra or metritis.
My year old Mastiff all of a sudden couldn’t use back legs for 2 days. Now he is up and eating but lethargic?
Definitely time for a vet check – whatever the underlying cause, you need to find out what it is and if there’s anything else going on.
Hi my english bulldog Is 7 months she still no on heat ???
Larger breed dogs may take a bit longer – up to 18 months! But if you’re concerned, make an appointment for an adolescent health check at your vets, although it definitely wouldn’t worry me yet.
I have a beautiful Rough collie shes around 8 , she has had 1 litter of puppies is she too old to have another litter.
Not certainly, but I wouldn’t generally recommend it. 8 years old is getting into “senior years” for most dogs, and at that age the risks of pregnancy do start to increase quite substantially. If you do want to breed from her again, then I’d strongly recommend getting a full health check done by your vet first, to make sure there aren’t any underlying health problems that could cause issues during the pregnancy.
Is it possible for a dog to stay in heat for 6 weeks?
It is possible but it’s not normal – it could indicate an ovarian tumour, for example.
I have a chi/pug 2 yrs old she was given to me back in June I was told that she had never had a heat cycle. She is in one now it has been 2 weeks now with bleeding is that normal. She is very thin I have not taken her to vet yet but am this coming next fri.
Yes, I definitely think a check up is needed.
My 10yr old staffy come into season nearly 3 weeks ago, but in the past week she’s been bleeding quite heavily, panting quite fast and just not wanting to walk round anywhere, she’s drinking water no problem, going to the toilet fine, I’ve not noticed her eating her food but it’s there for whenever she’s hungry but if I give her food she will eat it, she’s not been like this on any of her other seasons so don’t know if this is because she’s getting older? She hasn’t had one for over a year now either.
Hi Jenny, I’d recommend contacting your vet ASAP to discuss this and arrange a check-up for your dog. It could be the sign of another problem and she sounds as though she’s quite uncomfortable.
I understand the potential risks of not spaying and have also read to allow at least 1, preferably 2 seasons first, (even for a small breed), for full maturity from hormones and less risk of some long term health issues associated with very early spaying, but some vets say it’s ok to spay very early.
Please could you advise on this.
It’s a matter of the balance of risk. This is actually an area which is still under active study. What we do know is that spaying before the first season is the most effective way to reduce breast cancer in dogs (reducing the risk by a factor of 200!), and that the more seasons they have, the higher their risk of this disease. The evidence we have suggests that about 50% of all entire bitches will develop a mammary tumour (and roughly half of those will be malignant); if neutered before the first season, about 0.25% will develop one (0.5% relative risk); after the first it’s 4%, after the second it’s 13%, and if you let them have three seasons, there’s no reduction in the risk at all. This is the main reason vets often recommend neutering early – because it essentially eliminates this disease.
However, there is also research that early neutering (before puberty is complete) may increase the risk of certain tumours, especially osteosarcoma (bone cancer), raising the risk from roughly 0.06% to 0.12% – 0.24%, depending on breed. In addition, early neutering may put dogs at an increased risk of orthopaedic problems such as dysplasia or arthritis. There is also a suggestion that neutering before the first season may increase the risk of incontinence later in life, although this isn’t well supported by data.
As a result, it’s a matter of weighing up the risks and the benefits! Personally, I think that as long as the dog’s external genitalia are mature, I’m happy to neuter before the first season UNLESS she’s in a breed with a very high risk of osteosarcoma (large and giant breeds, especially Wolfhounds, Newfoundlands or Leonbergers), in which case I’d want to wait until skeletal maturity.
I hope that helps, but I’m aware that this is one of those topics where there is no right answer – it’s a matter of weighing up the pros and cons of each option.
My female staffie is due to come into season she has been swollen at the back end for 2 weeks now is this normal no blood has started yet!
It’s unusual, but it’s most likely that she’s just very clean and is removing all evidence of the discharge! However, if in any doubt, get her checked over by your vet – there are a number of hormonal abnormalities that bitches can suffer from that may need management.
Just wondering if someone could help me my dad’s dog is bleeding from her vaginas the dog is age 116
I would strongly advise seeking veterinary attention – this could be a serious health problem such as a pyometra, which may be fatal if untreated.
My friends brown Labrador is 10 years old. She hasn’t bled for a few years but has recently started to bleed. She has been bleeding for around 3 weeks. We have been staying with them and my dog who is male has been staying there as well. He has been castrated. Has she come into heat all of a sudden because there is a male dog in the house regardless of him being castrated?
It’s unlikely – some dogs do have irregular seasons and sometimes hormonal changes can be reportedly be triggered by the presence of entire males, but not usually castrated ones who aren’t producing the same pheromones.
Hello
I have a 10 year old female Shar-pei and she’s been bleeding for the past 2-3 month’s which isn’t usual for her she’s never been mated with another dog.
She drinks a lot of water and urinates frequently I am concerned about having her desexed as she’s at that age apparently where her life expectancy is not long according to Google info on this particular breed of dog.
This is my mother’s dog and she isn’t well enough to look after her and I now look after her at my mother’s home I am concerned that the vet might say to desex her and that she might not come out of the anestic procedure correctly causing her to die.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you.
Kindly regards Danielle.
I think she needs urgent attention from a vet – the symptoms you are describing could be those of a urinary infection, an open pyometra (a womb infection that can be fatal), or even womb cancer. My advice would be to get her seen and checked out as soon as possible; while she might be at increased risk under anaesthesia, any of these conditions could be even more dangerous if untreated.
Hi, my dog is 11 years old rn. And she had menopause for almost a few years, we didn’t know dogs do not go to menopause till last year, when we visited the vet. But, yesterday, she’s in her menstrual cycle! I caught her blood spotting on the floor. Is this normal? I’m pretty shocked and worried. Please reply.. Thank you.
Hello, given her age we strongly suggest you speak to your vet for further advice, they will be able to exam her if needed – even for your peace of mind.
Hi can someone please help me my female cat was on heat around November/December got out was out till late afternoon the next day I saw her back legs going the night before and a cat sitting next to her and she didn’t go on heat till a few days ago can she be pregnant she has a tummy and is skinny around the back legs bigger around the front legs she feels heavy she sleeps more and has no interest of getting outside she was very sooky in the last few weeks and still is even tho she is on heat she doesn’t call out as much as she did in November/December
Hi Jodie, it’s possible, but I’d recommend giving your vet a call for some further advice and they’ll be able to let you know if she needs to go in for a check up.
Hi, I have a 12years old female mastiff & it’s now been 6months since she last had her heat. Are there any chances that she can go on heat again? I bought her when she was 4years & I have never bred her since she was 4 years but I have decided to breed her now so that I can keep one of her offspring as replacement. She is a pure breed & her health is very excellent, she also has a very good temperament especially towards children.
Please advise coz I really want to keep her blood line. Thanks.
It is quite possible she’ll come into heat again – healthy dogs don’t usually go through the menopause, unlike humans. However, 12 is pretty old to carry a litter for the first time, and it could be really hard on her, especially as at that age it’s likely she has some underlying health problems. Our advice would be to get a full health check with your vet, and talk to them about whether it would be safe – or kind – for her to carry a litter to term.
When do dogs stop bleeding once in heat
Hi Shane. It varies with each bitch. In general, the season will be around 3 weeks long, and bleeding is for around the first 9 days or so.
I rescued my staffy girl 5
Years old 3 months ago
She was very malnourished when rescued
She not spayed & her last heat is unknown just wondering if she will go back on heat
It’s likely that she will Kylie. Keep an eye on her for any signs of heat and if you’re wanting to spay her, have a chat to your vet about the best time to do it. If you can tell when she has a season, it’s usually around 3 months after the season that it’s safe to perform the operation.
I feed an India stray bitch, she was being spayed/ sterilised 5-6 months back, but I found her having her period now as I saw her bleeding. So I am concerned whether they still get their period after being spayed
Not normally no. When a female dog bleeds, it’s not the same as a human period; it suggests that she is still trying to come on heat. This can mean that there is some ovary tissue still in her. We’d suggest getting her checked out by your veterinarian though, as it can also be due to certain infection which can sometimes be life-threatening.
I have a gsd and she is 2year old now she have not seen her hit period. what can I do need your reply…
Hello. If your dog hasn’t had a season and is over two years old, I’d recommend getting in touch with your vet and popping her in for a check-up. Seasons can vary in when they start, but your vet will be able to examine her and give you advice specific to her
Thank you so very much you addressed all of the issues I was wondering about.
Please for your dog health get your dog spayed. My little yorkie (age 12) has cancer because of me. I wasn’t a reasonable pet owner and because of that she is sick and I’m face with having her put to her down. No one should have to go though this you or your dog please do the right thing and take care of them, they can’t do it for themselves.
I have a 12 year old yorkie, she hasnt shown any bleeding for a couple of years when she has come into season. The last few days i have noticed a light pink loss coming from her, can this be a normal season showing or do you think i should take her to the vets.
You are right, it probably is just that she’s in season – however, an intact bitch that old is at a very high risk of a pyometra (a life-threatening womb infection), and of womb cancer. The symptoms you describe could equally well be caused by one of these serious conditions, so we’d strongly advise you to get her checked out by your vet.
Thank-you it’s help me
Hi. I have a 12 year old bitch Alsatian cross husky. It seems she has been in season about 2 months now. She running off with every male dog she possibly can. All dogs are coming round still after 2 months. She dosnt seem her normal self No more. and is usually very obidient But now totally different behaviour when outside. Is it the dog menopause ? Also I thinking. “is she going deaf as well ” . As she either completely ignoring me or can’t hear me shouting her Not as interested in food, As she usual is , also in the last few months
Hello Crissy, in your dogs case, I would get in touch with your vet and have her checked over. It could be a behavioural issue, but it’s best to get her checked.
Thanks So much,, We have a wonderful family daughter(dog)female Pittbull. She has her regular cycles around every six months or so, but not to the date. So I had talked to my vet about getting her fixed. He did tell me that as she gets older, it may be best and will help with the hormones and types of Cancers that I may be able to avoid. She is very clingy all the time, loves her mom (wife) and will not leave her side when in heat.. I am very glad to learn that just because she stops bleeding that she is still “ready” to get pregnant. Or more ready, I always wondered about that.. So Thanks for the great advice and information sharing.. We are still not absolutely sure we don’t want to have a puppy from her to keep and keep the bloodline. Because she is such a gorgeous champagne fawn rednose, and just awesome temperament. I am sure she would make a great mom for pups, and they would be awesome pups, its still a decision to have the right male, and have everything ready for her safety, and the pups safety.. Anyway,, Thanks for all the great information.
i have just got a male boxer dog and also have a 14 year old greyhound bitch who i havnt seen have a season in many years, is she still capable of comming into season and if so is she more likely too with the boxer being around
Hi Barry, this is an interesting one, thanks for asking. Actually, female dogs (bitches) don’t ever hit ‘menopause’ in the way that human women do. It is common for the signs of a season to be much reduced and therefore go unnoticed, sometimes referred to as a ‘silent season’. So the answer is that technically, yes, your bitch could become pregnant at 14. It’s worth considering having your dog neutered to reap all of the benefits that come with it, unless of course you plan to breed from him. As for whether you should spay your ageing greyhound, that one would be worth talking through with your vet to consider it on an individual basis in terms of health and benefits. We hope this helps.

My first female pit got pyometra and it was the most devastating thing I have ever had to go through with a four legged family member. Please talk to your vet about all the options.

Thank you so very much for this article! My Raven is a 45-50 lb(s). Black Lab, 6 years old and realized that she last had a season exactly on April 1st. Here we are, Oct. 1st, 6 months later and she’s yet to start her season and she always has 2 seasons a year. So I went to see if bitches also go through menopause like female women do and I come across this article. When I first got her as a puppy I did intend on mating her. But that hasn’t happened and even though I feel bad because I wanted us to have that joy, I want her spayed now more than ever after reading this. I don’t want my girl to get any of those diseases, I’d be crushed! This is awesome information, you’ve taught me and everyone else who comes to read this a lot. Thank you so much again!

This is really interesting. I always thought that female dogs stopped being able to breed after a certain age much like a human woman would stop being able to have children after a certain age. This has really opened my eyes. So glad I decided to get my dog spayed anyway.

I have a almost 8 year old shar pei bitch and she had a season in July last year which was mildly silent and nothing since, has good healthy diet and plenty of exercise, we lost our 3 year old french bulldog in may, could this have affected her cycle?
Supposedly, stress can cause disruptions to cycles, and I have read that it can lead to a completely silent cycle, which may be what’s happening here.
Why is my 6 year old Yorkshire terrier all of a sudden bleeding when she is in heat she never has before
Some bloody discharge may be normal, but if it’s suddenly started at that age, I think time to get that checked by a vet. There might be some infection, or some other underlying issue.
My dag is 13 she had 2 period a in. Two months is it normal
That’s very unusual and needs a vet check – it might be due to a hormonal imbalance or some other disease process such as an open pyometra.
Hi I have a female red nose pitbull she had two heats away how old could she be I have her for few months, rescue dog actually.
I also have a red nose female pitbull.. and she hasn’t had a period in 12months so I’m concerned
There are lots of possible causes, but my advice would always be to see your vet first and make sure there aren’t any underlying medical problems.
There’s no way to know I’m afraid! Dogs come into heat at very different ages, and different individuals go different lengths of time between seasons – anywhere from 5 months to 2 years can be normal!
How come my dog has started her period at eleven weeks old
Dogs do not get periods in quite the same way that humans do. A bloody discharge may indeed be due to her coming into season, but it can also be due to vaginitis or a urinary tract infection, and at that age, these should be ruled out by your vet first. If it’s not an infection, cystitis etc, then it is possible she is entering puberty unusually young, but this is rare. Talk to your vet for advice on ruling out the common things first, though!
My bitch has had everything but one ovary removed so that she dosent have proper seasons but I’m curious to find out if they will ever stop ?
Must they be called bitches
It is the correct terminology for a female dog.
it sounds so aggressive and abrasive 😭
With one ovary present she will still continue to cycle indefinitely; although a pyometra is much less likely (although still possible), she’s still essentially an entire bitch with all the pros and cons that implies.
Hi. My bitch has been bleeding for 19 days, the blood is now lighter and pinker. She is due to stay with family that have a boy (who is not yet old enough to be neutered), in 5 days. Will she still be able to get pregnant at this time?
It’s unlikely, but it is possible!
Good day please is it must that my dog will stay up to 10 days on heat before taking to for crossing
To determine exactly when she’s on heat, and when to take her to be mated, the best bet is to talk to your vet about a vaginal cytology smear.
