Question from Eileen Murphy
Hi I have a set of pups.all at 7wks old.took them for there vet check an she found a soft lump underneath one of the girls were her tummy is the vets said it is nothing to worry about! It is a hernia an won’t see to it unless.she gets.spayed but I am still worrying these pups.are bitchions
Answer from Shanika Winters (Online Vet)
Hi Eileen and thank you for your question regarding your puppy’s hernia, I will start by explaining what a hernia is and then discuss the treatment options.
What is an Umbilical Hernia?
When your puppy had her routine health check with your vet, the soft lump that was felt underneath her tummy (abdomen) is what we call an umbilical hernia. A hernia is a gap or opening that should not be there. You have most likely heard of people with a hernia, this will be describing a diseased disc in their back or an area of muscle separation leading to weakness.
The abdomen of most animals is made up of the organs inside it, a layer of fatty tissue and then three layers of muscle. These muscle layers are joined by a white strip of strong tissue called connective tissue, which forms the Linea Alba, which runs along the mid line of your pet’s abdomen just underneath the skin.
In some animals, like your little puppy, this strong white line is not complete and there is a gap of varying size; anything from a few millimetres up to a few centimetres. Through this gap some of the contents of the abdomen may poke through and be felt as a soft lump around the region where your dog’s belly button (umbilicus) would be found.
How are they Identified and Treated?
Umbilical hernias are often first noticed when your puppy has its first check at the vets, provided the lump that can be felt is small, soft and easily pushed back into the abdomen then your vet will tell you not to worry about it. If however the lump is large, not readily pushed back into the abdomen, changes colour, texture or is painful then urgent action need to be taken.
The small soft variety of lump is often left and the owner asked to feel at it every day at home and report any changes to their vet, as you have mentioned the other option is that the gap can be surgically closed under general anaesthesia specifically to treat the hernia or when your puppy is being spayed.
Is there anything to worry about?
It is very rare for a small umbilical hernia to become an emergency situation, I have only encountered this once where the hernia became strangulated, the small amount of abdominal fat which had pushed through the gap had twisted on its self and lost its blood supply leading to a purple firm and painful lump being felt underneath the dog. The dog came in as an emergency appointment and had surgery to remove the diseased tissue and repair the gap, she made a full recovery.
I hope that this has helped you to understand what the umbilical hernia your puppy has is and how and why we treat them. Please remember to contact your vet immediately if there is any change to the lump that worries you, we are here to help.

I rescued a 14 month old rottweiler from a local Animal Control Center and now discovered he has several pea size lumps. Is this normal practice for Animal Control to not fully examine before putting an animal up for rescue? He was only 70 lbs when I got him April 4th so the lump is easily visible. My last Rottie developed sarcomas at the age of three and five years . . . Surgery gets very expensive with no guarantees there won’t be more sarcomas down the road.
I’m afraid I have no idea what the US Animal Control Policies are! I would normally expect them to conduct a clinical examination though, if nothing else than to rule out any parasites or contagious disease before rehoming. So is it possible these have developed since?
Any other US readers familiar with this?
My 1 yr old shih tzu has a reddish bump hanging from his bottom butt area between his legs in the middle. What is this
It’s impossible to say from your description – if it’s always been there, it could be his prepuce (foreskin), erect penis, or scrotum. However, it could also be inflamed skin (e.g. a scrotal skin infection or traumatised hernia), paraphimosis (where the penis gets stuck outside), or a rectal polyp or prolapse. Definitely time for a vet check!
My dog has a lump under her skin that someone left there by squeezing her nipple I watched him do it but I never thought it would hurt my dog should I take legal action?
That would be a matter for you to decide, and I don’t know if there are any animal welfare laws in your jurisdiction. However, to cause that sort of damage it does sound like animal abuse.
My 10 month old puppy was sat in my lap when I felt a strange soft, squishy lump at end of his rib cage. I felt round it, looked at it and then pressed down on it and it responded to the pressure, and at same time my puppy sneezed and coughed a bit but then was completely fine. Should I take him to a vet to be checked out? I can’t see it now and I’ve felt all round his rib cage massagai g both sides together at same time with him laying down and stood up, but there’s no sign of it or anything now. He’s also acting like he normally does and not showing any sign of pain or discomfort.
That’s a weird one! Personally, I’d be inclined to get it checked out, because it might have been an abdominal wall or umbilical hernia, and if you can show your vet where it was, they can have a really good feel. If it’s disappeared now and never comes back, that’s great, and there’s a good chance that (whatever it was) it’s now gone away… But I can’t tell you that for 100% certain without seeing it, I’m afraid!
This is a very touchy subject I just purchased a 10-week-old standard poodle puppy and I noticed that he was licking his male parts and I noticed that the hair sheath of the penis has a black dried rough skin not sure if I should be worried about it or not or it’s because the other puppies were hanging off of him? Not sure
Black, dried, rough skin really isn’t good – it suggests some disruption of normal blood supply. It probably is due to trauma, but the prepuce can easily end up healing with a scar that prevents normal penile erection, called a phimosis, so I would really recommend a vet check sooner rather than later.
My 2 year old tiny chiguagua just had 3 puppy 4 weeks ago but I just notice her lower belly is swollen the 2 bottom nibbles
It’s hard to say exactly what’s going on here, but this could just be growth in her mammary glands? After 4 weeks of lactation, they’ll be approaching maximum size to keep up with the puppies’ appetites!
if in any doubt, get her checked over by your vet, but if she seems AOK in herself, that seems to be the most likely explanation.
My 7 month puppy Shih Tzu whines when we pick him up around his rib areas what should I do
I would be inclined to get him checked out by your vet – it might be that something’s painful in his chest or cranial (upper) abdomen. However – it could equally well just be that he’s now big enough that it’s uncomfortable to be picked up!
Hello I have just noticed my dog has a pink lump growing on her nipple closet to her bum end not her head end. Should I be worried?
A lump on a nipple could be any one of a number of things, including a tick, or a skin tumour on the nipple, or scarring, to name but a few. Assuming you’re sure it’s not a tick, I’d be inclined to get it checked out by your vet just in case it’s something nasty.
Good day I have a boer bull female as of late she stared gets lumps more like hives first on her hind legs now on her back. Her fur is picking up and the lumps are visible.kindly advise. Thank you
This sounds like a reaction either to some sort of insect bite, or another allergic response. I’d strongly advise veterinary advice if it doesn’t resolve rapidly on its own.
Hello!! My puppy is a 10 months old female indie. She has a soft movable lump beneath one of her mammary gland . It’s painless to her when i press it. And it slightly looks like enlarged in size than the 1st time I’ve noticed. She eats well and her bowel movements are also normal . Also she scratches that breast region frequently . May i know what’s wrong her
There are lots of possibilities, including benign cysts, fatty lumps – but also breast cancer. Although it’s uncommon at that age, it isn’t unheard of, so I would definitely get a vet check to see what’s going on there.
My 1 year old shih tzu has something round beside one of her nipples and its under her skin, under her thigh. I don’t know what it is. When I press on it, its painless for her. Do you have any idea what it is?
I{d definitely get that checked out – what you’ve described is consistent with a mammary mass. While at her age it’s unlikely to be cancerous – a cyst of some kind is more likely – I definitely think it should be seen by a vet before it starts causing her any problems!
My 1 year old pit bull have a dump sticking out looks like a umbilical hernia. It doesn’t hurt her when pressed or touched and it’s not changing colour? I just got her but other than that she’s healthy as can be! Should I worry?
It’s not likely to be imminently life-threatening, but I would get her checked over by your vet – if it’s large enough for intestines to get in and get trapped (strangulation), then she really needs surgery to close it up.
So my dog is an eight year old pomeranian and recently I noticed that she has this light blue area on her lower tummy. Maybe like an inch big, I tried to press it to see if it causes her any discomfort but nothing. Should I be worried and take her to the vet? It doesn’t seem to bother her in any way but it bothers me that I don’t know what this is.
It could just be part of her normal colouring. However, if it’s appeared suddenly, then it could indicate a significant disease process, such as an abnormality of blood vessels or clotting. While it’s probably nothing to be too worried about, I would be inclined to get it checked out by your vet.
Hi I noticed a bruise spot on the belly on my 10 day old French Bulldog puppy. Is it something to worry about? Could it be from the other puppies trying to suckle or maybe the mom accidentally put pressure with her foot or claw? Thank you.
A single bruise isn’t too much to worry about if everything else is normal – but if there are any other signs or he seems poorly, then vet.
My three week old puppy is healthy but he can’t hold his head up. When he walks he falls over or staggers. He can still sleep and play with the other puppies just fine. He has been like this since birth. Is this anything to worry about?
Yes – that’s not normal. Definitely time to get him checked over thoroughly by your vet!
Hi my dog matted other a week ago I can feel four lumps around her bottom of her belly and around her bottom four nipples what could this be
Thickening of the mammary glands in the progesterone dominated post-mating phase is not uncommon as her body prepares to make milk; however, if it’s not uniform and smooth enlargement and doesn’t affect all the mammary glands, it’s worth getting it checked by your vet in case it’s something more serious.
Okay my dog is a year old is a Chiweenie and it has a lump on the middle of his belly button should I be worried about it and what is it
If it’s recently appeared, I’d definitely get it checked out. If it’s always been there, and he has no other symptoms, then it might be an old hernia, but ask the vet to check it next time he goes in for a routine appointment.
Hi,
I have a 6 months Gsp female, I noticed a bump on her head. Looks like that has fluid inside. She eats and drinks normally but I am worried with that. What could it be?
Difficult to know exactly what it is – but my advice would be to get your vet to check it out just to make sure it’s nothing too serious!
My daughter had her dog spayed on Monday. Today she is not eating, drinking a little and appears to have swelling at the incision but also up her side by ribs and under arm pits. Should she go to an emergency vet or is this normal?
24 hours later to still have significant effects like this isn’t normal; I’d strongly advise getting her checked out. It might just be that she needs more pain relief, but personally, I’d rather that was dealt with earlier rather than later!
My newly adopted bunny 3 months old, was spayed before I adopted her and I noticed she has what looks like a Pink bellybutton and her sister does not, is this serious?
Probably not, it could just be some scar tissue – or it could even be the navel! Might be worth asking your vet or a vet nurse at your practice to take a look, to set your mind at rest.
I have a 5 week old pup and I just found to lumps under his neck I need to know if the worm medicine did that to him and is he going to be ok.
There is no way to know what they are or what caused them without being checked over by a vet – so I think that’s your best bet. Good luck!
Hi i have a question i have n small puppy she is six weeks old and my vet told me she hot an hurnia on the belly small one if i carry her is it dangerous and what can i do to it so it wouldn’t get bigger
Hernias can be very serious, if large, but small ones often never cause a problem once the dog grows a little. It’s a watch and wait, but definitely try not to put too much pressure on her abdomen.
Brought 8 week old shih tzu female 3lbs. She was healthy no lumps or bumps but needed first vaccines and exam. I went to Vetco. I wasn’t allowed in exam room. I was hesitant but trusted them. When tech brought her out I saw a pink lump. I was about to say what’s that when she said she has a possible umbilical hernia. It was ok when I handed her off to her. Could they of hurt her or pressed too hard and caused this because I had her a week. I always inspect her and give her belly rubs. I know for a fact nothing was there. They don’t care and I’m scared that I might have to re-home her due to this . Not knowing what this might cost to fix during a spaying. I’m disabled and use Friends of Animals Certificate to fix my dogs or cats because on fixed income.
. I need help whether any advice or no how much it would cost me to fix during a spay. Thanks worried Pet owner
It really does depend how big it is (not all need fixing – many dogs effectively grow out of them). Remember, it’s only a “possible umbilical hernia” right now! The cost will depend on the situation and the clinic, and on the exact surgical techniques required. I’d suggest having a chat with the clinic and asking them for an estimate, just in case it was needed (although there’s a good chance it won’t be!).
My one year old rescued bunny gave birth to 6 babys last decembar (23/12/20) but due to extream cold none of the babies survived . now (10/6/21) i observed one of her brest has a small lumps but it is not discoloured no puss is comming out and she doesnt bleed . what should i do i dont have any vet where i live and cant afford to go out in this extream covid situation
Sadly, there’s nothing you can do without knowing what the cause is, and that needs a vet to look at her. Hopefully, it’s just her mammary tissue reorganising. Good luck!
My 1 year old dog has a lump of the side of her abdomen, it feels soft , like a fatty lump. Do you think I need to check it out ? Is it serious please
Fatty lumps are uncommon in dogs that young, so I would be inclined to get it looked at, to be honest.
Can a puppy bruise another puppies tummy by sucking on it? I have just noticed my 1 week old pup has a bruise on her tummy.
Yes – and it happens all the time! If it’s just a single small bruise and there aren’t any other signs (e.g. bleeding, spots on the gums, changes in appetite, faeces, movement or temperature) – and it doesn’t seem to be spreading, that’s probably what it is. If it doesn’t start to fade within a day or two though, time for a vet check.
Hi i noticed my 9 month old havapoo has about 6 lumps on her stomach in different places. She eats and drinks fine and goes to the bathroom fine. I was just wondering if you have any idea what it could be. My vet can’t get her in until qpril 2nd
It depends where they are and what they are! Firstly – are they nipples? Or breast tissue? At 9 months these can suddenly become much more obvious!
Second – are they ticks, on the surface? If so, they need to be removed with a tick hook (after having first checked that they aren’t nipples!).
If not, then time for a vet check; if she shows any other signs then it’s urgent, otherwise a wait is unlikely to be a disaster.
I saw that my puppy has a lump on her head. When I checked on her earlier at 7AM there wasn’t a lump but when it I checked on her at 11AM, there was suddenly a lump. Is it possible that it is because of the other dogs that they might did a playful bite on her head?
Yes, it’s a definite possibility I’m afraid! Lumps that come up that fast are usually due either to injuries or, less often, inflammatory conditions (like infections). If it’s not bothering her, monitor closely, but if it seems to grow, becomes hot, painful or swollen, she shows any change in behaviour, or develops any other signs, then get her checked out by your vet.
I have new born puppies this morning and 2 have like a long string hanging from their belly,is this normal?
It’s probably the umbilicus, and if so, yes it’s normal! If concerned, though, it’s worth asking your vet to check them over.
Hey. I am buying a pup (American bulldog). She’s currently 10 days old. The breeders been sending me photos and videos but today I got a video and she has quite a large lump by her jaw/ear area. I’m really worried about her and the breeder hadn’t even noticed until I had pointed out. He’s said he is booking her in to see a vet but I’m just so worried. She did not have a lump on any other photos or videos this seems to have appeared overnight. Do you know what this could be please? She hasn’t opened her eyes yet but has started walking. She’s one of the biggest pups so she’s eating well.
Lots and lots of possibilities, but the most likely is probably that she was playing rough with someone! Bruises and abscesses can both come up fast, although unusual that young. I think wait and see what the vet has to say… good luck!
Hi I have 9 puppys i discovered a few yellow bumps on the belly of the one puppy..she died yesterday .The other puppy had small yellow bumps she died this morning.Theres 3 puppy i just saw earlier the pimples starting now, please help me,what can be the problem as the other 4 dnt have it.
Sounds like an infection that’s working through the litter – get them and the mum to the vet ASAP.
My chihuahua is 10 years old but she started to get these 3 little lumps above her 2nd nipple, my mom said it would go away but it continued to grow. It spreaded down to her 2nd nipple now and it’s a lot bigger and harder, and now she has another one. We looked at the second one she was growing and it was tiny and then it swelled up and went hard, my little dog also has the other side of her body near a nipple looks like she gots lots of wrinkles and when we pick her up she yelps:(
This needs vet attention AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. While there are other options, what you are describing could easily be breast cancer which is often highly malignant and spreads fast to other organs if not rapidly treated.
Is it contagious to humans, if the black stuff is coming out ?
Most cancers aren’t contagious, although some forms of mastitis can be. In any case, it’s definitely vet time!
My mother pit has a ping pong sized lump that looks like its getting bigger just under her 3rd nipple just on one side i believe it is her left side and her puppies were born on halloween so i believe they are 5or 6 weeks old they have teeth and she still feeds them i give them a little bit of both hard food and i cant nessisarly keep her from her babies and she will keep cleaning up after them as long as they are feeding off of her but that seems to be working its her first litter i need help with her lump im unsure but i think it hurts her and i hope its nothing serious but help me
OK, that needs looking at by your vet – it might be a milk cyst, but it could also be a mammary tumour – they sometimes do increase in size after pregnancy. See the blog on lumps for some more ideas!
Hey, I’m not sure if this is the right forum for this question or not, but here goes, we believe my Japanese Spitz is pregnant and recently we’ve found these light pink bumps on her skin. They don’t look like pimples or scabs, and they seem to be really itchy.
We gave her a bath because my husband thought it might just be irritation caused by dirt, and the bumps went away for about half a day, but they’re back and she’s still scratching/nibbling like a villain.
A little more info:
1. This is our first winter in Utah. We moved from Kansas this summer.
2. Since she’s a tiny dog, she’s been eating puppy chow, and recently my husband introduced the dogs to dentastix and VetIQ calming treats.
3. She’s been acting more aloof recently, like laying on the floor rather than the bed.
If you have any idea what’s going on, or are willing to look at some pictures of the bumps, please let me know! Thank you.
Most likely it’s either an allergic reaction to something, or signs of an ectoparasite. However, we’re UK based, so aren’t familiar with the flora or parasitic fauna of either Utah or Kansas… as a result, I’d advise having a chat about this with a local veterinarian!
Hi there
I have a dog who gave birth to 8 puppies in the 10th of November. The other day one had a lump on its leg which burst in the night wasn’t causing it any pain. Now we have 5 puppies with a lump on its neck and we are worried as to what it could be. The puppies are not in any pain. Any help would be great. Thank you in advance
Definitely time for a vet check – there’s no way to say for sure what they are but I don’t like the fact that it seems to be spreading through the litter!
My did had puppies and one of the has a knot where the cord was what can I do for him all he does is cry
Get him checked over by your vet as soon as possible – if all he does is cry, there’s a problem.
Hi, my almost 3 year old dog is pregnant, and she has a lump under her belly, she is about 5 weeks along, her due date should b thanksgiving.. I was just wonder is this was normal or is we should have her looked at.
It depends what sort of a lump! Her mammary tissue (breasts) will start growing quite rapidly at this stage, and if it’s that, it’s normal. Some small dogs may also get a visible swelling around the umbilicus, but while this isn’t always a problem, it can be a sign of a hernia that’s shown itself due to the abdominal changes in pregnancy. Of course, it could always be something more sinister like a tumour, but that’s much less likely in a dog of her age. I think a phonecall to the vet to chat about it will probably be enough for them to confirm if it’s a normal finding.
My puppy husky has a soft bump on her tummy I think it is a hernia but I want to make sure it’s not gonna cause any problems for her. Could there be any complications?
Sadly, yes – hernias can result in intestines or other abdominal contents becoming trapped (or “incarcerated”) and losing blood supply. It’s always best to get your vet to check out the size of the hernia if there is any doubt; if there’s a clear lump it suggests that something has got into the herniated space, which is potentially a problem – and could even be fatal in some situations, if not addressed.
I have a two – three week pup that has a small round bubble looking thing in his right eye that does not respond when I try to flush it with lukewarm water. They all just started to see last week Friday. What can I do? No money for vet bills..
Find a charity that can help – that really needs veterinary attention.
My dog is 13yrs old its a red nose pitbull. Recently i notice that he has big red blisters by his private part & belly. They look like is fill with blood. He has been complaining but i do not know what to do. Vets are expensive?
Unfortunately, this does need a vet check. Blood blisters like that are not normal and may suggest very serious diseases such as pemphigus or poisoning.
I have a 2 month chiguagua and he has a lamp on his belly button not that big but he’s pretty big should I be concerned
Umbilical hernias are the most likely cause. We would advise getting it checked out by the vet. Normally they aren’t a major problem and can be fixed when neutering (it’s a genetic defect, so affected dogs should always be neutered to prevent them passing it on), but occasionally a loop of intestine can become trapped in there which can be dangerous or even (rarely) life-threatening.
Hi there, our puppy who is a year old I found a soft lump right in the centre of her stomach, where the fur goes into a point. I only found it this morning and at first thought of a belly button but read that they aren’t like this. Please can you help as because of the coronavirus we’re not sure if we can be seen.
It is likely to be a small umbilical hernia; however, it’s impossible to say for certain from a description. Many vets are now offering video consults and this might be one of those things where they can set your mind at rest remotely!
Hi my 6yr old shihtzu had a couple of lumps under his neck on checking today he has 5 the only way I can describe them is they feel like testicles no broken skin not painful but I’ve now also found 1 under each armpit I’m taking him to the vets tomorrow hopefully if they will see us as were on lockdown could this be cancer I’ve cried all day hes my baby
Definitely worth a checkup – but remember, many of these lumps are benign fatty masses. Good luck with him!
My 4 month old female pup has two soft masses under her skin in the abdomen, they are pretty symmetrical. Is it possible I’m feeling her ovaries or should I be concerned about uterine tumors?
It’s pretty much impossible to feel a dog’s uterus or ovaries from the outside, so I very much doubt it’s that. The most likely explanation is that, given her age, she is developing breast tissue (just like humans do at puberty) and that’s what you’re feeling. However, if you’re concerned, a vet or vet nurse check might be a good idea, to set your mind at rest and rule out anything nasty. Many vets offer “adolescent health checks” for things like this, so you could see if your practice does?
Good Day
My daughter recently rescued a crossbreed husky. She had him at the vet and they dewormed him and gave him injection. The vet informed us that the pup is 2 months old. He also suggested we give him a course of calcium tabs to strengthen his bones. Currently he is on pedigree for pups and water. His tummy started to swell recently but it is saggy, what can the cause be?
Thank you in advance
There are a huge range of possibilities I’m afraid! Options might include worms (although if the vet dewormed him that’s much less likely), ascites (fluid in the abdomen from gut disease, heart disease, kidney disease or infection), muscle wasting, or even prior starvation and weak abdominal muscles. I think in this particular situation you’d be best off phoning the vet who saw him originally and having a conversation with them. Good luck!
Hello my puppy is 4 months old , i was sitting on the couch petting him on the back I felt something strange on his back it’s a little ball that can be easily be move around with my fingers , I’ve searched what could it mean . I couldn’t find a specific one that would help since the vet closes on Saturdays . I need to know if the little soft ball inside of him is normal or bad so I could take him to the vet next week 🙁
It really does depend what it is. If he’s microchipped, that might be what you’re feeling; other possibilities include a sebaceous cyst, or an insect bite. While a tumour is possible, it’s quite unlikely in a puppy of that age, but if you’re not sure what’s going on, a vet check up is probably a good idea.
My female right foot the claw has crossed over on to other claw when you touch out she yells it must be sore
OK, if it’s that sore – vet check needed! There might be trauma from the claw, or the crossing over might even be due to a broken toe. Other possibilities include a nail-bed infection or a foreign body.
Hi, my puppy has an umbilical hernia, the vet had told us it was that and to come back once hes 10 weeks and he’ll see then if he needs surgery though he is now 8 weeks and the hernia hasn’t gone away or gotten any smaller but now it looks like he has something inside moving around. When he was about 4- 6 weeks it just felt soft and puffy but i couldnt feel anything now at 8 weeks I see something moving around slightly and I dont know what it is or if it’s something else to worry about. Could it be one of his intestines? Or something else?
It’s really common for some of the abdominal fat pad to protrude into an umbilical hernia, and it’s harmless if that happens. This is the most likely cause. However, it is also possible for a loop of intestine to enter the hernia; if it gets trapped, it can be very dangerous. I think a repeat check up might be a good idea – your vet will be able to check whether it’s fat or intestine.
Hi my name is tiffany I have a birthday 13 month old Chihuahua she’s 4 pounds I noticed she has three lumps that feel like hard balls right in her stomach area what do you think it is
It’s impossible to say over the internet, I’m afraid. Lumps could be inside the body (swallowed objects) or under the skin (infections, scars, bites, or even tumours). I would advise contacting your vet for advice; in the meantime, take a look at my colleague Liz’s blog.
Hi My 2 week old puppy has a big lump below the front shoulder, yesterday she was fine,
OK, probably a bump from playing too hard… but in a puppy of that age, I’d always advise veterinary attention. It’s probably nothing but there are a lot of delicate structures in that area, and as she’s still growing, it’s really important to maximise healing.
I came home and my shepherd is battling to move i can feel a big lump on the side of his stomach . He did not want to eat yesterday and i thought it was due to the heat but today he still did not eat but i have managed to get him to eat some meat . My problem is it is Christmas so the vet is not open. I am just wanting to know will he be ok till tomorrow thank you
I think this does need veterinary attention – if he’s able to eat, it’s unlikely to be bloat (although it cannot be ruled out). However, in a shepherd type dog, abdominal masses are not uncommon and usually need fairly urgent attention.
Oh yea,it feels a bit soft almost like liquid inside or something and when checked again there was this spot that was a bit red.
Yes, it does sound like it might be an abscess; it could also be a seroma left over from a previous injury. I think that’s going to need veterinary attention to be honest – to determine exactly what the cause is, and then to treat it to ensure it doesn’t get any worse.
Hi ,my name is Tara, I hope you get this message. My pup he’s almost 2 months old and today mommy realize that he has developed a large lump under his arm. He was injured before I got him and he was infested with maggots but the person who had him before were able to kill them and got them out, when he came and live with us he was still recovering and everything healed up,it’s only just now that the lump appeared. Is it an abscess?? When I lift him up and touch it and squeeze ,he doesnt feel any pain. He’s still as hyperactive as ever, plays rough the same way with his brother . Please could assist me ,am worrying..
I have a 4 year old Maltese cross with Chihuahua and she had a lump where a umbilical hernia would be but its new can dogs get an umbilical hernia if they didn’t as a puppy. My dog hates the vets so seeing if anyone’s heard anything like this before? Not really sure what a hernia should feel like or anything so was wondering if anyone could help me?
Also it’s under the skin. But there is no head or anything idk what it’s caused from!
Hey, so I have a puppy she is now 8 weeks old and I’ve noticed 4 lumps come up. (2 on the top of her neck, and 2 on her back) I’m worried she whines she I touch them to hard. What are they caused from? I was told fleas but honestly idk my local veterinarian is on vacation I need help please! Can anyone give me any advice on this?!
Those lumps do sound like reactions to an insect or tick bite, but they could also be abscesses with infection under the skin. I do think that they need looking at though, especially if they’re painful – your veterinarian should have made arrangements for care of their cases while away, so contact their office and ask to be put through to whoever is on duty.
I have a puppy that is 9 weeks old and when we picked her up the has 2 lil lumps on both sides of the stomach what do I do or what is it we have 7 other puppies and they don’t have it
I’d get her checked out by your vet – it’s impossible to say what the lumps are over the internet without seeing and examining her (sorry!).
Hi I have a 1 year dog who was neutered and it’s been 10 days his dissolving stitches look like it’s healing fine but while on his back I noticed a small soft lump in between (middle)his penis and right leg hinge I’m really worried just wondering what it could be
P.s his been fine his been eating drinking water/pooping n been playing abit with my aunt yorkie
It’s not uncommon for a small swelling to develop around the neutering site, due to tissue swelling and local inflammation where the testicle was removed. If it seems hot, red, uncomfortable, or he’s bothering it; or if it hasn’t resolved in a day or two, contact your vet for a recheck, just to make sure there’s nothing amiss. One possibility is the development of an inguinal hernia after neutering, but this is quite rare.
Hi, I have a 6 week old German Shepherd Pitbull mix and he had a small bump on his head (seemed like a white head). I know I should not have but I tried to pop it and stopped when I seen it turn red. It is now red/pink and is now peeking a little out of his fur. What do I do? Is it a big deal or would it eventually go down or go away? By the way, I did see a flea on his chest.
Dogs don’t commonly get spots like humans do, although it’s not unknown amongst puppies. The most likely cause is a small wound that has become infected; by squeezing it, you may have released the pus under the skin. While there’s a good chance it will go down on its own, there is a possibility that there’s a foreign body embedded in it (like a small splinter or even the head of a tick or other parasite), so I’d be inclined to get your pup checked at your veterinarian’s, and pick up some flea-treatment that’s safe for such a young pup while you’re there.
My two-year-old bully pitbull has umbilical cord hernia and it’s pretty big it’s like the size of half an egg shell sticking out of her belly was wondering if it was painful for her or important to get it looked at
I think that really should be looked at – a hernia that big could easily allow a loop of intestines to get trapped (or “incarcerated”) inside and that could be fatal. It probably isn’t as big internally as on the outside, but it’s definitely worth making sure!
My dogs poo is like cow pat coming out
Diarrhoea like that has a wide range of possible causes; we’d strongly advise you to seek advice from your vet, who knows your dog and their medical history.
Hi, I found a dog and he could be a chow, (not sure) and he had so many fleas.. I gave him baths and literally everything except medicine. He has severe skin rashes, and he has Countless tiny white bites and I mean too many to count that are on his stomach. I think he could have a disease and since he’s my dog it has spread to me and the itch is all over my body and it is unbearable. Can I please be informed on what is going on. I’m also very poor and I can’t afford medicine, I can barely afford food and I have so much compassion towards my dog and it’s so hard. Please help.
Dear Nathaniel,
It sounds very unpleasant, but I’m afraid we cannot diagnose over the internet; I’m afraid to say though it really does sound as if your dog required veterinary attention to control the condition which is clearly causing a welfare issue for him. In terms of your own symptoms, I am not permitted to advise you and I very strongly suggest you contact a human healthcare professional.
Hi, My dog has a lump on her belly it is a little red and puffy it is also on her left side any suggestions
Hi Sarissa. It’s difficult to say, as to determine what the lump is, a vet would really need to feel the lump and take a sample (usually done through a needle) to get an accurate diagnosis. I’d recommend popping your dog along for a check with your vet and they could give you an accurate diagnosis, and let you know whether any further action needs to be taken (e.g. removing the lump) or if it can be left alone.
My male puppy 2moths old has something like lump on it’s penis they are like 3 on it’s penis and it doesn’t pain him
From your description, it’s not entirely clear what this is, so I would suggest a vet check.
I have three 6 week old puppies & I noticed that one of them has a lump on his belly. I’ve read past comments & seen that it could be a umbilical hernia. It doesn’t seem to bother him when I touch it but I am worried ….I know taking to vet is the best choice but I can’t really afford it any suggestions?
Hi Heather. The best course of action would be to take the pup along for a check-up with your vet if at all possible, as this is only way to know for sure what it is. It would be worth giving your vet a call to see what options you have – for example, some offer free nurse clinics for new puppies and the nurse will be able to give you further advice and speak to a vet if necessary.
Hi! I have a set of puppies and one of my fur baby has a soft lump near his groin on the lower part on the left side. She is just turning 1 month. And it scares me what that lumps is. Among them she is the one who is fat. I hope it’s not that serious
Hi Cyris. I’d pop your puppy along to your vet for a checkup sooner rather than later if possible. Many pups can have things like hernias, and these don’t always cause a problem, depending on where they are, but your vet will need to perform a thorough clinical exam to find out exactly what the lump is and can then advise you accordingly as to whether any treatment is required.
hi there. My dog had puppies 5 weeks ago and one of the puppies has a soft bump on its head but I noticed a couple days ago. They are doberman pinschers and last time we had a set over a year ago we had an injury happened to one of the puppies and it also had sustained a bump on one side of the head over one of the eyes. This one appears to be across both eyes and does not appear to have any pain but is squishy when you push on it. My knowledge she has not been injured however mom gets aggressive sometimes when they try to feed she barks growls and bites them sometimes. I’m wondering if it could be from this. More importantly I’m concerned if it sounds like anything dangerous. It seems to me the last time we had puppies that the new owners took that one to the vet and they said that Dobermans have some kind of a blood condition and they don’t heal as efficiently as it seems like I’m wondering if you could let me know anything about this. Last time around I remember putting ice on the puppies head but it didn’t seem to make a difference. This time I haven’t tried that nor do I know if I should. Looking for any suggestions thanks Jen.
Hi Jen. You’re right in that Dobermanns can be prone to a certain condition called Von Willebrand’s Disease, which is where there’s a deficiency in blood platelet function, resulting in excessive bleeding. So if your pup was to suffer from this condition, and had been injured in any way, you could potentially see excessive bleeding due to lack of clotting. I’d recommend taking your pup along to see your vet as soon as you can so that they can perform a thorough clinical exam of the swelling and the pup in general, and do some further blood tests etc if they think it’s necessary in order to make a diagnosis.
My puppy is about 3 months now and he has a little ball on his stomach my his privates and when i push on it it goes in and then comes back out what can that mean
It sounds as though it could be an umbilical hernia, as discussed in this article. Pop your puppy in for a check over with your vet and they’ll be able to let you know for sure what this is, and what, if anything should be done. Your vet will also be able to give you advice on monitoring it and recommended next steps.
My dog is 11 months old and she has a soft lump popping out by her ribs, she is in no pain and running around like she does and is eating and drinking as normal she isn’t on any medication either she is a Rottweiler cross boxer
Hi Ricky. It would be worth a quick check-up with your vet just to find out what the lump is and whether it needs any treatment or not, as there are several things that can cause lumps such as this. Pop along to see them just for peace of mind.
Good morning. I have a pug puppy that I got on Saturday. I have recently found a lump on his belly. Its soft and small. It does not seem that he is in any kind of pain. He had fleas and we gave him a proper bath to remove them all. He had a flea coller, but we removed it since he keeps on scratching. We pick him up on a regular bases. Could it be an allergic reaction to the collar or to the shampoo, or because we pick him up to much?
Hi Anette, there are a number of possibilities for this lump from a hernia or an injury to an allergy or something altogether different. For this reason, a vet check is definitely what we recommend. Puppies this young can deteriorate so very quickly so the sooner the better. Fleas can also cause more of an issue in the young as anaemia can result which is pretty serious as you can imagine. So while you’re at the vets, talk to them about getting rid of that flea infestation too with safe and effective methods and products. Best wishes.
My 10 month old puppy has lumps near the scar from when she was spade. They were not there immediately after her operation but appeared about 6 weeks after. The vet checked them at the time but didn’t seem concerned. Today I have noticed that she has a small scab in the same region. She seems perfectly fine in every other way.
Hi Mandy, this is a tricky one to answer without examining the lumps/scab. If they aren’t going away and in fact are changing, it would be worth getting back in touch with the vet who last examined them so that they may make a comparison and advise you from there.

I have a 17 week old puppy. We got him from a rescue three weeks ago. He has been to our vet two weeks ago and got a great bill of health. Just yesterday I noticed while petting him that he has a small squishy lump on his right side at the end of his rib cage, right before his hind leg starts. He doesn’t have one on the left side . I don’t know dog anatomy, so I’m wondering if this is part of his body?! Like a muscle? It does not hurt him at all. He is a coon hound so he has very long legs and he slides and falls a lot when he is playing. I’m wondering if he could have pulled a muscle, caused a hernia- if one would even form there? It’s more towards his back rather than his tummy, we r going to call our vet anyways to get it checked out but I was wondering if someone else knows what this is? Thanks in advance !
Hi Jenn, there are a number of things this could be including a hernia which is why it’s best to be examined by a vet in person. And especially considering the age of your dog, it’s best to get it checked soon. Do let us know what the outcome was after your vet appointment! Many thanks

I recently discovered a lump on my chihuahua/yorkie mix 4 month puppy’s lower right belly. Its squishy and doesn’t seem to bother her. She is still extremely active and doesn’t seem different. What could this be?
Hi Tiara, there could be many possible causes for this lump including herniation. It would be sensible to take your puppy to be examined by your vet who will determine the cause and whether it needs to be acted upon. Whatever the cause it would be sensible for the vet to see the lump currently and help you monitor how it changes. A hernia can become problematic to a serious degree as can other types of ‘lumps’ therefore assessing it with the vet and making a plan from there is the best option. Best wishes.

Hi, Imy dog has had a lump on her head for about a year it goes up and down but recently the lump has a tiny scab on it, today I noticed the scab has gone, and it was pussing a little so I squeezed it and a yellow/green colour come out form it she is totally fine in herself and it didn’t seem painful atall for her any idea what is could be ?
Hi Alistair, it sounds as if there’s an infection there which could have resulted from a number of causes including a cat scratch, a foreign body or a thorn, among other things. A year is a long time to have this infection so I advise that you take her to your vet to have it investigated. It might require cleaning, foreign body removal, antibiotics for example, if it hasn’t cleared up of it’s own accord in a year then it’s unlikely to and the infection may only get worse. Best wishes.

I had a litter of 10 boxer puppies 4 days ago. I had one female that had a rough birth, born with her sack broken for about ten min. Before she was fully delivered. We expelled small amounts of blood from her mouth and nose and she was not a strong nurser. After two days she was lethargic and weak. All litter mates were strong.out of desperation We gave her a small proper dose for her size of pyrentyl .. As well as small doses of kyro syrup, making sure she is feeding from mommy at least every 25 min. Waking her up if she feel asleep during feeding. She seemed to react well to all if this and feeding stronger more active and alert… Today we took everyone to the vets to have tails and dew claws removed and with the input of our vet elected not to go forward with this on our little girl due to her weakened state. He felt she was strong and just needed some time and tlc. But now 4 hours after being home we were going over all the babies and noticed she has a lump about half the size of a gumball by her Lowest rib on her left side, not on the belly. It’s is soft and almost reminds me if a large hive. I’m trying to figure out if this could be from worms, her worm medicine, fleas(all our animals are treated but we were at the vets) or possibly an allergy to the latex gloves we used today at the vets…. Please help me out with possibilities I don’t want to lose this little girl if we can do ANYTHING to prevent it.
Hi Jade, that is a rough start to life isn’t it? You are obviously dedicated to this little lady and as such I’d recommend that you take her back to your vet to have this lump examined. The lump could be related to a number of things including a herniation from a rough birth or allergies, it’s really hard to say. Some of the possibilities could be quite concerning. Therefore, as I’m sure you’re aware, responding rapidly to health issues of a puppy, especially one who is compromised already, is the best bet for ensuring a healthy pup. Best of luck, we really hope she makes it.

Hi, I have a six week old pittbull pup and his belly button hasn’t healed since birth and yesterday we gave him a bath and he has been cold every since and he wouldn’t move but he started back walking on that night and his been whining all day and night .. Can you please tell me what could be wrong?
Hi Shonna, I’d recommend you take your puppy to see your vet as soon as you can. He is rather young to be have been removed from the litter (assuming he has been removed) and he is clearly displaying signs of being unwell. There are a number of possible reasons for the symptoms he’s showing, an examination by a vet sounds like the best way forward.
Best wishes

My puppy was attacked and shaken by a pitbull I had to pry the bulls mouth open after I stopped her from being shook for about 5 secs before I was able to control the pits frenzy. She is very sore now and to touch or move her is very painful for her but on her own she can slowly get up and walk outside and go to the bathroom she is drinking and eating fine but on her belly there is a soft saggy buldge that is very tender. Is she gonna be ok? Please help
Hi Colin, I’m sorry to hear your puppy has undergone such an ordeal. I would strongly recommend that you take your puppy to the vet ASAP for examination especially considering the pain she is experiencing and the bulge that you have noticed. I hope she makes a speedy recovery.

Hi, I had recently got me a new pup….. She’s been perfectly fine with me since I got her, she’s had all her shots and has regular visits with the vet. I recently discovered a lump on her tummy and its not a soft one, its actually really hard I’m extremely worried about what it could be. In my last visit with the vet we were prescribed cepholexin due to a skin infection she had when I got her and I’m not sure if maybe that’s what caused the lump. She’s starting to breathe very heavily as if she grasps for air, even as she sleeps , please help me!
Hi Irene, it’s really best to see your vet again and have the lump checked out. Although it’s unlikely that the antibiotics you were prescribed has caused a reaction, it will need checking.

Just curious I have a German shepherd, & I noticed she has a bump just underneath right in between where her rib cage is… Is it possible she’s pregnant or am I just tripping out?
Hi Tori, she will only be pregnant if she has been mated! The bump could be fatty tissue, sometimes a hernia or even a boney structure. If you are worried please get her checked out at a vet near you.

Hi in have a 12yr old German Shepard she has for a really big lump on her stomach she’s in no pain with it but the lump is getting bigger as I’m writing this its same size as a coconut I’ve been staying away from vets because I don’t want her to die under Anaesthetic as she means everything to me
Hello Brian, you really need to take your dog to a vet. This lump has obviously grown in size, so it will not just go away. The lump could be anything, from a fatty tissue (called a lipoma) to something more sinister – but the only way to find out is to visit a vet. If left the lump could cause many more problems, let alone be difficult to surgically remove. Ultimately your dog will be in discomfort and we are sure you don’t want that. The chance of her dying under anaesthetic is low, but increases with the more strain on the body system along with age factors, which is why you need to seek veterinary advice now. Best of luck.

My puppy is 8 weeks when she is laying on her back I can feel what feels like intestines in her lower abdominal. Is it just organs or do I need to vet her to get her checked out?
Hi Tabitha, she sounds fine – the soft lump that some puppies get is a hernia, which is normally around the area of the ‘belly button’. Of course if you have any worries at all, please speak to your vet.

My puppy has a lump right at her bellybutton but it’s not squishy I can move it around but it’s a hard lump
Hello Emily, because it seems a hard lump, it is best to get it checked out with your vet. It possibly is a hernia, but your vets will be able to give you the best advice upon examination of your puppy.

Hi! My 10 week year old German Shepherd and pittbull mix puppy has a soft lump on her stomach. But it seems not to be hurting and I am worried because I’ve been reading and it says it could be a hernia. I am wondering if I should take her to the vet? And if the lump could be something else?

He also peas alot like right after i take him out or in small spots around the house. Do you think it’s serious? Im taking him to vet on thursday …
Hi, from the position, it could be a umbilical hernia which can be repaired if needed, even may be part of the breastbone. It is good that you are getting him checked out for peace of mind!

He still plays alot like normal but has been walking a little diffrent. He use to eat four times a day small portions but now only 3 and he does not finish it all.

And I have got an 8 week yr old puppy with a lump on her tummy

Hello, it is possible that your puppy has a umbilical hernia, which can be quite common in pups. If the lump is soft and in the middle of the tummy, this is certainly possible. Speak to your vet and they can let you know the next step – many times this is easily sorted out.

My puppy is 5 months he has a lump under is groain is soft what could it be
It’s difficult to say for certain from that description; it certainly could be a hernia, but there are other possibilities. Remember, at this age he’s going through puberty so it could also be his genitalia developing and enlarging as is natural at that age! I think it’s probably best to get him checked by your vet who can examine him fully and make sure that everything is as it should be.
Hi, Sir Dave Harris! May I ask if my bitch had an umbilical hernia removed, can she safely get pregnant? What am I suppose to do if she’s pregnant? Any tips? Hehe. Thank youuuu.
Yes, it shouldn’t affect her fertility. However, as it seems to be heritable in some situations, it probably isn’t a good idea to use her for breeding. If she is pregnant then see your vet, either for health checks or misalliance treatments.
