At this festive time of the year, it’s time to do the last rush-buying presents for our family members and this usually includes our pets too! As our pets are such a big part of the family, it is only natural to want to spoil them this Christmas. So, if you have rabbits, let’s have a look at what you can give them as a festive treat this year.
Table of contents
Fresh Cranberries
I mean, I’d be a little underwhelmed if I opened my present and found that someone had gifted me a few cranberries. However, our fluffy rabbit friends will most likely be over the moon with this seasonal snack! Cranberries are not toxic to rabbits and are packed full of vitamins and antioxidants, making them not only tasty, but a beneficial superfood snack too! As with any foods, monitor their intake and stop offering them cranberries if any diarrhoea occurs.
Edible Hideaways
If your hutch is in need of a bit of a revamp, then look no further than an edible hide. Not only does the hide provide rabbits with a place to keep warm and feel safe, but it also allows them to nibble at the structure itself, helping to wear down their ever-growing teeth. The hide is made from alfalfa which contains high levels of calcium and proteins, helping to support healthy growth and development.
‘Boredom breakers’
Rabbits love to eat and, in fact, they need to constantly be eating to keep their guts healthy and avoid entering a dangerous condition known as gut stasis. This is where the digestive system comes to a complete halt. So, why not mix things up a bit and have a look at some boredom breakers. Similar to the edible hides, this “flower n forage” makes a great addition to any rabbit hutch. Not only is it pretty to look at, but it also contains cornflower, rose and calendula petals.
VetBed Fleece
Why not treat your bunny to new bedding? This helps them to stay warm during the colder winter months. VetBeds for bunnies are durable, washable and hygienic. They also have brilliant heat retention properties which our fluffy friends are sure to appreciate. VetBeds are versatile and can be used not only in the hutch, but also in carriers, hides and sleeping areas.
Hutch Sign
I’m an absolute sucker for personalised gifts, especially where animals are concerned. So, how about a personalised hutch sign with your bunnies’ names on? Or, how about ‘Fluffy Butts Only’? Get creative and go wild! Etsy and other such websites will have plenty of options to choose from, and you can really go to town with the colours, font and decorations.
Avoid holly
If you’re deciding to decorate your hutch, avoid using holly. Even though it will add a touch of festivity to their enclosure, holly is toxic if ingested by rabbits. Speak with your veterinary surgeon if you think your rabbit has ingested holly leaves or berries.
Poisonous Poinsettias
Many flower petals are delicious for rabbits to eat and offer them plenty of benefits. However, do not be tempted to feed them any of the petals from the festive poinsettia plant. These plants are toxic to rabbits, so keep them far away from rabbit hutches and off the ground to ensure that they do not get sneakily nibbled.
Cuddles are a good enough present too!
The rising cost of living is hitting us all, so if you don’t buy your rabbits (or any of your pets) any treats, don’t feel guilty! Your love, care and commitment to looking after them is enough and I’m sure they appreciate it, even if they can’t tell us that they do. Give them a cuddle and enjoy another festive season with your little balls of fluff.
