Choosing a litter tray for your pet cat may seem like a simple choice, but there are quite a few factors to consider when making this decision.

Why is choosing the right litter tray for a cat important?

Litter trays are where cats urinate and defecate. If they don’t feel comfortable in their environment or have a bad experience using the litter tray then this can result in them not using the tray and choosing to urinate or defecate elsewhere in the house. Or worse still avoiding toileting all together as much as they can; which can result in more serious health conditions such as urinary issues and constipation.

What factors do you need to consider when choosing a litter tray for a cat?

1) How many cats do you have

You should always have one more litter tray than cats. So if you have 2 cats you need 3 litter trays. And these should be placed in separate areas of the house so the cats have a choice over which litter tray to use.

2) How big is your cat

Not all litter trays are the same size and not all cats are the same size! It is important when you are buying a litter tray for your cat that it is big enough that your cat can fit comfortably inside, turn around, scrape up litter and not be squashed. As a general rule the litter box should be at least as long as your cat is, nose to tail with tail extended; and as wide as your cat is long with tail not extended. But overall, the bigger the better!

3) Does your cat have any mobility issues?

Some litter trays can have steep steps up to climb into them. This can be less suitable for cats with mobility issues or underlying issues such as arthritis. Choosing a litter tray with a flat entrance that the cat does not need to climb into is a great option for cats with mobility issues.

4) Does your cat spray and kick the litter a lot when they toilet?

Some litter trays have very high sides and some are covered. These options are better for cats that like to make a mess when they toilet as they help keep the litter and soiled material within the litter tray. If you choose to use a covered box it must be kept very clean; as they are not well ventilated due to being covered. This means ammonia and unpleasant smells can build up quickly; which can irritate your cats lungs and also make an unpleasant environment they are less likely to use.

5) What your cat likes

This can be difficult to know to start with, especially with a new cat. Some cats will like their litter box being covered, others will hate this and refuse to use a covered litter box. Some cats will not be bothered by more fancy automated litter boxes, others will be startled by them and refuse to use them which as already discussed can result in significant health issues.

It can be a good idea to buy two cheaper styles of litter box similar to what you might like to have in your home. And see what your cat prefers to use. And then you can upgrade this to a nicer box once you are certain it is a good fit for your cat.

Where can you purchase a litter tray for your cat?

Most pet shops will stock a range of litter trays as will online retailers. It can be a good idea to go and look at a few different designs in person as it can be difficult to appreciate styles and sizes online.
