Why does the MP’s report on animal welfare want to muzzle the RSPCA?

Last month's EFRA Select Committee Report on Companion Animal Welfare came up with some excellent recommendations to improve the welfare of pets in the UK. More controversially, the report also recommended that prosecution powers should be withdrawn from the RSPCA, and this is what made headlines in the newspapers. Yet when the composition of the committee is looked at in detail, perhaps this is no surprise.

Celebrities support calls for funding to help local authorities deal with dog breeding abuses

Puppy farming continues to be a serious issue, and the more publicity that's given to the topic, the better. So it was refreshing to see a group of celebrities offering their support to this important subject.

Beware Bird Flu – A DEFRA warning

This morning DEFRA, the government’s Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, has issued strict instructions to all poultry keepers to keep them indoors for 30 days. Unusually, this instruction doesn’t just apply to commercial poultry keepers, but backyard flocks as well.

Boxers: a unique and intriguing breed of dog

I have known Frazier, Ali, and Lennox-Lewis. Most recently, I have met Tyson, who is pictured at the top this column.  And the world recently learned about another example: Buster, who featured in the latest John Lewis advert. Of course, I am not talking about human boxing champions. I am talking about a wonderful breed of dog known as the Boxer.
